The main object and salient feature of my improved tab is the construction of such a device which will possess adequate strength, withstand rough handling, the printing` or display index of 'which will be maintained clean, and which may be washed without inliury if found to be necessary.
lfurthcrmore, my improved tab is easily and readily attached to a leaf or card and is comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Referring to the accompanying` drawings, forming a part of this specification, it will be i noticed that-Figure 1 is a face view, on an enlarged scale, of one of my improved index tabs; Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same; Fig. 3 shows the manner of attaching the tab to a leaf ol' a book; and Fig. 4 shows the position which the tab occu vies when fastened to an index card or the lile.

Although l have described somewhat in detail the manner oi' making my tab and its physical characteristics, it is to be understood that my invention is not strictly limited to the reeise details. herein set forth, Which may li departure from the heart and essence of the invention.

In an index tab of the character described, the combination of an inner stiffening body, a fabric secured to said body-and havingI a pair of ends projet-,ting beyond the same, and a paper disp ayinl on its outer face an index character fastened to said fabric, said paper being provided with a transparent protecting facing or coating, substantially as described.
2. ln an index tab of the character described, the combination of an inner piece of cardboard, a 'fabric secured to said piece of cardboard and having a pair of endsprcjecting beyond the same, a paper displaying; on its outer face an index character fastene to said fabric, and a protecting transparent' Celluloid facing or coating for the outerV sur face of said paper, substantially 'as described.
