To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Enunsr MnLviLLn fr. Dnnson, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Victoria, in the .Province of British Columbia and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Drum and Cymbal Beater, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to drum and cymbal beaters, and more particularly to such as are adapted to be actuated by the foot of the operator.

An obj ect of this invention is to provide a combined drum and cymbal beater, adapted to be operated by the pressure of the foot, and having means for securely holding a drum in position, so that positive blows may be struck both upon the drum and the cymbal carried by the drum.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specilication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure l is a side elevation of the device, showing in dotted outline., a drum held in position bysupports, Eig. 2 is a cross section on the line 2-2 of Eig. 3. Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section of the device showing, in dotted outline, the beater striking the drum. Fig. 4 is an enlarged end elevation of one of the drum supports, and Eig. 5 is an enlarged longitudinal section ol" the head ol the drum beater.

Before proceeding to a more detailed description of my invention, it should be understood that I provide a combined drinn and cymbal beater adapted to be actuated by the foot of the operator.

In the use of my device, the operator rests his foot upon a pedal, which he actuates with his heel. This, in turn, operates the combined drum and cymbal beater. It has been found that a moie regular and decisive blow can be struck on the drum when the operator uses his heel on the pedal, than with the common form of pedal now in use, in wnich the operator uses his toe. I further provide adjustable supports which serve to hold a drum securely, though removably, in position.

suitably tapered. Movably mounted upon the base l by means of a hinge 2 is pedal #l having its outeiend suitably tapered, to correspond with the tapered portion 2 of the base, and to permit it to swing pivotally with respect thereto. A heel plate 6 of leather, rubber or the like, is arranged on the end 5 of the pedal.

Located on the pedal and substantially at the center thereof, is a stirrup 7 of any suitable material, suoli as leather, metal or the like. The latter has its ends S rigidly secured at the outer sides of the pedal by means of screws or nails 9.

Mounted at the end of the base l, opposite to that which is tapered, is a block l() having a cut away portion l1, which receives the end l2 of the pedal. As shown most clearly in Fig. 2, a hinge 13 having spiral spring 14 carried thereby, the spring having its opposite ends I5 resting upon the opposite leaves of the hinge to resist the approach of the leaves, is secured to the base and the block by means of screws I6. Located upon the top of the block 10 is a socket i7, screws 18 being used to secure it in position. The socket is threaded, and has an opening 19 in which a set screw 2O is adjustably arranged.

I Jrovide a drum beater 2l comprising a shank 22, having its lower end. suitably threaded, to engage the coi'respondingly threaded socket 17 and having a head 24 for striking the drum, and a. cymbal heater 25, consisting of an olf-set llexihle member 26 having a metallic head 27 and carried by the drum beater. The cymbal heater is securely attached to the shank 22 near the upper end thereof by means of wire, solder or the like.

I further provide two drum supports 38 and 39 respectively having clips l0 arranged at their upper edges for securely holding the rims Lil of a drum. The support 38 is provided with studs e2 for engaging the notches 37 of the bracket. This support is further provided with an eye A shank 44 having a hook 45 at one end for engaging the eye, and having its other end adapted to pass through an opening in the support 39 and suitably threaded to receive a butterfly-nut 46, serves adjustably to connect the two supports.

Having thus described my invention, I

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. In a drum beater, a shank having a threaded end, a head arranged upon the threaded end, said head consisting of a plurality of sections of cork, nuts on each side of the sections for retaining them in position, a filler inciosing the sections, and a cover for the flier.

2. In a drum beater, a shank having one end threaded, a head arranged upon said threaded end, said head consisting of the combination of sections of cork arranged about the end of said shank, means for securing said sections together, a ilier arranged about said sections, and a covering for securing said filler upon said sections.

3. In a device of the class described, a base, a hinged pedal mounted upon said base, a block arranged at one end of said base and having a cut away portion to receive one end of said pedal, a drum beater removably mounted upon said block, a bracket arranged at the end of said base and adjacent to said block, and adjustable drum supports, one of which is provided With headed projections, the bracket being provided With notches for receiving the projections.
