T'HE COLUMEIA PLANOGRQEH c0.. WASHINGTON, n. c.
OTTO DOB/N, 0F NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
DRUM AND CYMBAL BEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 28, 1919.
Application filed February 24, 1919. Serial No, 278,594.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO DoRN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drum and Cymbal Beaters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and construct the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an apparatus whereby a bass drum and cymbal maybe played by the performers foot, and my 111- vention has for its object the production of a drum and cymbal beater that is perfectly balanced, with unlimited speed and certain stroke without loss of motion, and one in which a natural arm struck tone is produced.
Further objects of my invention are to increase the simpllcity of construction and" operation of the device by decreasing the number of parts of which the usual beater is composed; by lessening or avoiding the necessity of adjustment of the various parts and by increasing the manipulation of the device.
lVith these ends in view my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more, particularly pointed out in the claims. While the preferred form of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, yet it is to be understood that minor changes may be made without departing from the scope thereof.
In the drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved form of device; and
Fig. 2 represents a transverse section taken on line 00-m of Fig. 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the drum provided with the usual hoop 2. The device comprises a support or standard 3. The standard 3 may be secured to the hoop 2 by means of a bracket 4:, one upturned end of which engages with the hoop 2 and the other upturned end of which is secured to the standard in a manner to be hereinafter described. A clamping member 5 is rotatably mounted on the bracket 4: by means of a screw bolt 6, and clamped in its adjusted position by means of a thumb nut 7 by means of which the hoop 2 of the drum is clamped between the upturned end of the bracket A and the clamping member 5. The pedal 8 is pivoted intermediateits ends, between upstanding ears 9, rising from a bracket 10 near one end thereof. From the other end of the bracket rises an up turned end, which together with the upturned end of the bracket 4; and the standard 3, are clamped together in any desired manner, as by means of the screw bolt 11 and thumb nut 12.
Rotatively mounted in the upper end of the standard 3 is a shaft 13 to which is secured the spring actuated arm 14. Intermediate of its ends in said standard is also rotatively secured a shaft 15 upon which is secured a roller 16. Secured to one end of the pedal 8 is a stud 17 to-whioh, in any suit able manner, one end of a strap 18 is secured, said strap passing under the roller 16 and the other end thereof being secured to the arm as at 19.
Around the shaft 13 is located a spring 20 which is bent intermediate its ends and has both ends coiled around the shaft 13. The looped end of the spring bears against the underside of the arm 14 and the two free ends .bear against the shaft 15. The construction of the spring is such that it tends to normally hold the beater rod or stem 21. spaced from the drum, in a horizontal position as shown, and upon pressing the pedal with the foot on the rear end of the pedal the arm swings forward and carries the beater 22, which is carried by the outer end of the arm in order to strike against the drum to deliver a blow thereagainst and thus sound the same, thereby producing a natural arm struck tone. The free end of the arm 1A is provided with two apertures to receive the stem 23 of the cymbal striker and the stem 21 of the drum beater. Thumb screws 24: are employed to hold the drum beater and cymbal striker in their locked and adjusted positions.
Experience has demonstrated that the organization above described is a highly efficient one, and while I have shown the preferred embodiment of my present invention, I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as obvious modifications thereof, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made by any skilled mechanic, and such departures from What is herein set forth, I consider Within the scope and terms of my claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination With a bass drum, a clamping bracket adapted to engage the drum hoop, a vertical standard, means for clamping said standard and bracket to the drinn, a pedal base in connection therewith, a pedal pivotally mounted on one end of said base, a standard secured to said pedal, a spring actuated drum beater arm pivotally mounted in said standard, cymbal beater carried by said arm, a roller mounted in said standard, and a flexible connection passing under the roller, one end of said flexible connection being secured to the drum beater arm and the other end thereof, being secured to said standard.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination With a bass drum, a clamping bracket adapted to engage the drum hoop, a vertical standard, a pedal base, means for clamping said bracket, standard and pedal base to the drum, a pedal pivotally mounted near one end of saidbase, a standard secured near the other end of said base, a spring actuated drum beater arm pivotally mounted in said standard, a roller mounted below said arm in said standard, and a flexible connection passing under the roller and operatively connected to said arm and pedal.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination With a bass drum, a clamping bracket adapted to engage the drum hoop, a vertical standard, a pedal base, means for clamping said bracket, standard and pedal base to the drum, a pedal pivotally mounted near one end of said base, a spring actuated arm pivotally mounted in the upper end of said standard, a drum and cymbal beater carried by said arm, a roller mounted below said arm in said standard and a flexible connection passing under the roller and operatively connected to said arm and pedal base.
This specification signed and witnessed this 6th day of February, 1919.
