To all whom it may concern.' j
Beit known that I, ABEL MAGUI, a citizen of the United States of America, and residing in the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bags, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bags and particularly to safety attachments therefor, itbeing my obj ect to provide an efcient but simply constructed device to prevent the surreptitious opening of the bag while it is being carried by the handle.
In the accompanying drawings in which my invention is illustrated, Figure 1 is an elevation of the frame of a bag to which my device is applied; Fig. 2 is an elevation of an end of the handle and its attachments drawn to a larger scale; Fig. 3 is a similar view with the handle down and the jaws opened; Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4, Fig. 2 Fig. 5 is a section at right angles thereto; Fig. 6 is an elevation of a modified construction; Fig. 7 is an elevation of another modification; and Fig. 8 is a section of a further modification. l
The primary obj ect of my invention is to rovide a device to secure shopping bags against theft while they are being carried. To this end the lock which I provide is controlled by the position of the handle so that when the handle A is up, i. e., the position which it takes when the bag is being carried, the bag cannot be opened, while when the handle is down, t. e. that which it normally assumes when the bag is held preparatory to opening the same, the lock is in such position that the bag may be readily opened by operating the snap catch B or other usual securing means.
As shown in the drawings, though I do not limit myself to the construction there shown, my device comprises rings or flanges 10 carried by the thimbles 11 which are mounted on the opposite ends of the handle A. The thimbles swivel freely in the bearings 12 and 13, carried by the jaw C of the bag frame, and the rings 10 are thus rotated by the swinging of the handle. A notch 14 is cut in the ring at a predetermined point such that it will be presented to the engaging finger-15, carried by the other j aw D of the frame, when the handle A is swung down. If now thej aws C and D be closed and the bag lifted by the handle A, the lifting of the handle A rotates the ring 10 and thus locks the finger 15, the latter bearing against the inner face of the ring. The jaws cannot be again separated until the handle is again swung down and the notch 14 comes opposite the engaging finger 15, so that, the latter may be withdrawn. So long therefore as the bag is carried by the handle it is obvious that the jaws are locked against pickpockets and cannot be opened by merely pressing the catch B as now frequently occurs.
The location of the ring 10 is of no importance. For instance it may be carried at the Outer end of the thimble as shown in Fig. 6, or itmay be placed intermediate the ends as in Fig. 7. The finger 15 must be inclined to bring the same into engagement with the ring l() when the jaws C and D are of equal length and meet face to face as in Fig. 4, but it .may be made perfectly straight when, as in Fig. 8, the jaws are of unequal length and overlap as shown. Various other constructions will readily suggest themselves to meet varying conditions.
While it is not necessary, I prefer to provide the handle A with a bearing band 16 of any suitable construction to save the leather or other material of which it is made, from wear against the finger. This band may be dispensed with, as shown in Fig. 2, since the lock is perfectly operative without, so long as suflicient space is left between the handle and the ring, for the play of the finger 15 when the handle is rotated. If desired the catching finger 15 may be made of light spring metal and provided with a beveled tip as in Fig. 3 so that when the bag is closedv with the handle up, or in any position such that the slot 14 in the ring is not presented to 95 the finger, the latter will be merely sprung out and snappedback into position beneath the ring. Various modifications of this and other features of my device will readily suggest themselves and I do not limit myself to the exact structure shown.
l I claim as my invention:
1. A safety device for bags, comprising a notched ring rotated by the movement of the handle and carried together with said handle by one jaw of the bag in combination with a locking member carried by the other jaw and adapted to enter said notch when the handle vhandle `provided With a lthimble, a notched iring on said thimble, in combination With a locking member carried by the other jaw and adapted to enter said notch when the handle -is m a predetermined position and engage the ring `When the handle is rotated, substantially .as described.
4. A safety device for bags, comprising a handle mounted on one jaw, a bearing` band therefor, a notched ring carried by the handle, in combination With a locking member carried by the other jaw and adapted to enter said notch when the handle is in a predetermined position and engage the ring when the handle is rotated, substantially as described.
5. A safety device for bags, comprising interlocking members carried by the jaws of the bag whereby said jaws may be opened only When the handle of the bag is in a predetermined position and one of said members being of resilient material whereby said 1nteiloekiiig members may be engaged witliou t :1-
regard to the position o f the handle.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of tivo subscribing Witnesses.
