Description

S. A. BROUKWAY.
ALLIGATOR WRENCH.
APIfLIOATION rum) APRJB, 1908.
Patented June 8, 1909.
' INVENTOR A ltarney proved wrench will be described hereinafter SCOTT A. BROCKWAY, Ol FORDYCE, NEBRASKA.
ALLIGATOR-WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
"'Iatented June a, 1909.
' Application filed April 18, 1908. Serial No. 26,86.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Soo'rT A. BRQCKWAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fordyce, in'the county of Cedar and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Alligator-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wrenchesoi' the alligator-j aw type, and has for its objectthe. provision of a wrench in which one jaw and its operating arm are formed integral and rigid y secured in a suitable casing, while the other jaw is pivotally secured in the casing and provided with gear-teeth, and the oper ating -handle therefor is also pivotally secured in the casing and provided with gearteeth meshing with the gear-teeth on the pivoted jaw, a spring being provided to hold the pivoted handle so that the jaws are open. T e'construction and operation of my imand illustrated in the accompanying drawigure- 1 is a side view of my im roved wrench; and Fig. 2, a similar view, s owing a portion of the casing removed. In the drawings similar reference characters indicate'corresponding parts in bothviews.
1 indicates a casing referably made in two parts and held together by means of the screws hereinafter particularly described.
2 indicates a fixed jaw'havmg a handle formed integral therewith, said Jaw and the handle being secured in the casin 1 by 7 means of screws 4. 5 indicates anot er jaw I that mesh witligthe' pivotally secured in casing 1 by means of scrpw 6' and having gear-teeth 7.on its rear en I 7 i 4 8 indicates a'handle pivotally secured in the casing' by means of screw 9, and having gear-teeth'JOoEthe-end inside of thecasing p V and t e pivoted handle to hold the handles teeth? onthe jaw J I,
3 and engaging a notch 12 in the under side i of handle 8, the purpose of said spring being to throw the handle 8 away from handle 3,
which operates through the instrumentality of gear-teeth 7 and 10 to move jaw 5 away from jaw 2, it being understood that the wrench is operated to close the jaws into an operative position by squeezing the handles casing a jaw pivotally secured in the casing havinlgea'r-teeth 'formed integral therewlth, a hen e pivotally secured in the casing having gear-teeth formed integral therewith and engaging the teeth on the pivoted jaw, a coil- .engaging the hand e of the fixed jaw normally in a separated osition and the jaws open, a shield secure to the handle of the fixed jaw adjacent to the sprin and the pivoted handle provided with a soc at to receive the shield when the pivoted handle is actua'tedtoward the handle of the fixed jaw, substantiallyas shown and described.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand in presenceof two subscribing witnesses.
SCOTT A. BROOKWAY.
