CARLv SCHORTAILOF NEW-"YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AlND A. L. BOGART, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters-Patent No. 92,374, dated July 6, 1869,
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and xnaking part of the same.
To all lwhom, t may concern:
ABe it known that I, CARL SCHORTAU, of NewYorkl declare that the following is a iiill,'clear, and exact de' scription thereof, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is afron't elevation of my improved fluting-v machine, and
Figure-2 is an end elevation of the same.
Letters oflilre naine and .kind refer to like parts in each ofthe igures.
M y invention relates to a class of devices having for their object the flirting or crimping of portions of ladies wearingapparel, which object is accomplished by means of -two tlnted rollers, pressed together by springs, and between which the fabric to be operated upon is drawn by the rotation of said rollers; and
Said invention consists in the means employed for raisingl the upper roller, so as to permit of the insertion of the cloth, combined with the devices for adjusting the tension of the springs, and, consequently, the pressure ofthe rollers upon said cloth.
In the annexed drawing- A represents a base, from which 4extends vertically the standards or frame AB B', for supporting the rollers C-O, and other mechanism connected therewith.
' The lower roller, U, is joui-nailed in said standards, in the usual manner, while theupper roller, G', is journailed within boxes DI), which slide vertically within slots iu said standards, so as to permit of the adjustnient of said rollers to and from each other.
For convenience in placing the article to be crimped between said rollers, the standard B h as a lateral opening immediately above the journal ofthe lower roller.
A crank, c, is attached to the lower roller, for imparting to it the required mot-ion, which is in turn imparted to the upper roller by means of the corrugations, which engage .n'iththose upon said roller-. E E represent two rods, extending from above,
through the frame and slots, and having their lower ends swivelled within the tops of the boxes D Said -rods also pass through the ends of a bar, F,
corresponding in length to the width ofthe frame, and are provided, at their upper ends, with heads, e e, by
means of which, if said bar is elevated, the bolts are raised, carrying with them the boxes and rollers.
Pivoted within a vertical longitudinal slot in the har F is an eccentric lever',iG, which bears upon the upper part of the frame immediately beneath the bar, and furnishes a means' by which said bar may be elevated or depressed, it being readily seen that, as said lever istnrned to one side or the other, the large or small radius of the eccentricis interposed between said bar and the frame.
The lower portion of cach rod E is provided with a screw-thread, upon which ann't',"H, having a corre" sponding thread, is placed, said nut being fitted to the -grooves in the standards, and having a-vertical motion only, so that if said screw is revolved, said nut will be either raised or lowered.
A spiral spring, I, is placed around each rod, between the nut and upper end of the slot, and exerts a downward pressure upon said nnt,`and, through it,
'the rod E, and the box D, upon the upper roller, which .pressure may bevaried, as desired, by adjusting said nut up or down.
It is believed that the within-described devices for raising the upper roller, and for regulating the tension of the springs, are so simple, effective, and durable, that by their employment the machine is rendered the ino'st useful and desirable of any in use. v
Having thus fully set forth the nature andV merits of my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within-described devices for raising' theA roller l and adj nstingthe tension, consisting of the rods E E,
bar F, eccentric lever G,`nnts H H, and'springs I I, vin combination with the boxes D D, rollers C O, and frame A, B, and B', substantially as shown, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 20th day of May, 1869.
CARL SCHORTAU. Witnesses:
A. L. BoGAnT, DAVID Runneronn.
