Description

S. N. PAGE. Washing-Machines.
Patented Dec. 30,1873.
I???" eJJeJ UNITED STATES PATENT Orrron.
SAMUEL N. PAGE, OF LAMAR MILLS, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,091, dated December 30, 1873; application filed October 2, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, S. N. PAGE, of Lamar Mills, in the county of Clinton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved washing-machine. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a detached view of part of the same.
Corresponding letters are used in the several figures in the designation of correspondin g parts.
This invention relates to a certain improve ment in washing-machines; and it consists of slotted uprights having rollers, the lower ones of which are suspended through hangers, embraced by adjusting screws, which depend from a bar or board, acted upon by the upward pressure of springs, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
In the annexed drawing, A A refer to two uprights, and B B to horizontal pieces united in any known way to the former. O is a large upper corrugated roller, the axis of which enters the uprights A A, and is formed at one end with a double crank, c to enable the said roller to be operated. D l) D refer to three smaller corrugated rollers, the axes of which enter vertical slots (Z d d in the uprights A A, and curved metallic plates or bars E E, held in close proximity with the latter by staples or guides e e e entering said uprights, and suspended from bell-shaped bars or hangers F F, which are, in turn, suspended from the hooks or eyes formed upon the lower ends of the adjusting-screws G G, which depend from a bar or board, H. The board H passes through slots h in the upper ends of the uprights A A, and rests upon and is fastened to coiled or spiral springs I I, which rest upon and are secured to the board or cross-piece B. Through this lower rollers D are set in motion by the action of the upper one C.
The adjusting-screws G G are specially de signed for regulating the tensionor pressure of the springs I I, which, through the mechanism hereinbefore described, impart upward. pressure to the lower rollers D D. By uniting these adjusting-screws to the hangers F F,
through eyes or hooks, the said hangers are caused to have a greater or less amount of oscillatory motion when the rollers are in operation, which, in turn, impart a like movement to the lower rollers D, to enable the latter to act in the capacity of rubbers.
J is a guide-roller, around and from which a belt of canvas or other suitable material, J, passes over the lower rollers D D, and which has its bearings in pendants slipped upon the axis of the center one of the lower rollers D. This roller is kept intact with the uprights A by means of the flat metallic springs jj, as shown in Fig. 1, for the purpose of avoiding friction between these parts.
Having thus described my invention, what. I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The uprights A A, having slots (1 d h, in
combination with the rollers C D D, the latter being suspended from the bars E and hangers F, embraced by the adjustingscrews G G which depend from the bar H, pressed upward by the springs I I, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 29th day of September, 1873, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL N. PAGE. Witnesses:
G. W. BATOHELER, JOHN LONG.
