To all whogn 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. OKEEFE, a citizen of the United States, andresident of Milwaukee,- in the county of Milwaukee and- State of VVisconsin, *have invented certain new and'usefu'l Improvements in'E'ngines;
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a ver tical, longitudinal section, as indicated by line 1&1 in Fig. 2, of a-cra'nk-and 'crosshead casing of a horizontal engine rovided in the oil-space thereof .with a con uctor through which to flow a cooling liquid, a portion of the engine-crank, cross-head and piston-rod being in elevation and the connect1ng-rod indicated by a dotted line; Fig. 2, a transverse section of the casing on-the plane indicated .by dotted line -2-2 in Fig. 1,-and'Fig. 3, a
horizontal section of said casing'on the'plane dic'ated by line 3-3 in Fig. 2. I
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates the crank and cross-head casing of a horizontal steam-englne. Arranged inthe oil-space of the casing to be partly submerged by oil thereinat normal level is a-cofl ductor, ipe-coil B, 1
preferably in the form of. -a through which to flow a 000 ing liquid. Stretches of this pipe-coil form of conductor are shown extendmgparallel to the crosshead guide h in the casing, and inlet and outlet cocks, g, are provided in connection with invention consists in what is herein said stretches of the coil outside of said casi ng.
In practice, oil from the casing 'A is splashed by the engine crank 0 onto the;
guides h to lubricate the cross-head" D and thereafter find its way backinto the deepest portion of said casing? "Ordinarily, theaforesaid-casing and oil't erein become heated to such'a degree as tobe detrimental to said oil, but by running water or other cooling liquid through the conductor in the oil-space, as
aforesaid, said oil is kept at a sufficiently low temperature, the area of cooling surface-be;
.ing'variable to meet the requirements in vanous eng1nes,and whlle I have shown my invention as applied to a hqrizontal'crosshead engine, it IS just as applicable to a vertical crosshead engine.
I claim: v 1. An engine-crank and crosshead casing having a cross head ids, and a cooling li uid,conductor that is containedin the oil space of the .casing and provided with arallel to opposite sides of said stretches cross-hea guide in sald casing.
2. An engine-crank and cross-head casing havingacrosshead guide, and a cooling liquid conductor in the form of a pipe-coll that,
is contained in the oil-space of the casing and opposite sides of said cross-head guide.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwauke'e,in
the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin in the presence of two witnesses.
