To all whom it may con-cern:
Bc it known that I, CHARLES N. Tueren, a United States, residing at Hagerstown, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Splash Lubrication Systems; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full7 clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainstomake and use' the same. y
My inventionk relates tosplash lubrication systems for hydrocarbonengines.
It lia's for its object to regulate to better advantage the amount of oil through which the crank of the engine passes at each revolution.
The invention comprises an inner receptacle or pan arranged within the under bon net of the crank case in position to receive the crank onits down stroke, and means for regulating `the flow of tbe-lubricating fluid to said pan from said under bonnet proper into which it is splashed from the pan by the action of the crank.
The invention also consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described andk specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiments of my inventidn: Figure 1 is a broken side elevation of the under bonnet of the crank ease of afour cylinder engine, the crank shaft and one 0f the cranks being shown. 'F ig. 2 is a cross section on the line of Fig l, and Fig. 3 is'y an enlarged broken section on the line f-fy of Fig. 1, the crank and shaft being omitted.
While I have illustrated my inventiouas applied to the crank case of a four cylinder engine, it will be understood that it may be employed with equal success in connection with the crank cases of engines having` one or any number of cylinders and cranks.
In the drawing, l designates ,the under bonnet of -the crank case which is divided into four compartments bythe ribs 2 preferably placed equidistant apart and extending to a suitable height from the bottom. It will be noted that before the engine is started, the oil will seek its level in thc pan but that when the crank begins to turn and passes through said pan, it will splash the oil from it into the outer compartment. The oil niust then find its way back into the pan through the opening l0. Tlieiitnv of` 1 the oil through this opening may be regulated to suit requirements by means of the needle valve.

In a splash lubrication system, the combination, with the under bonnet of a crank case, of a pan arranged therein in iosition to be entered by the crank on the own stroke thereof, said pan being shaped 'to conform' to the path of movement of the crank and having an opening to permit the lubricating Huid to' enter said pan from said bonnet.
