CHARLES K. VOLCKENING, 01 NEW YORK, N. 1'.
ABM AND BRUSH FOR BOTTLE-WASHERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES K. VOLCKEN- ING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Arm and Brush for Bottlenshore,
of which the following is a full, clear, and v exact description.
My invention relates to arms and brushes purpose being to provide a metallic arm or stamped from sheet metal and bent into suitable form, after which a brush of rubber or other resilient material is vulcanized upon the arm.
My invention further relates to various improvements in both the arm and the brush 5 2 is a plan view of the arm as it appears be- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 2, 1908.

Serial No. 465,646.
Fig. 5. This blank comprises two lobes 10, 11 connected together by a portion 12, the latter being provided with holes 13 whereby the blank may be readily bent. The lobe lt provided with a slot 1% and also with spacing lugs 17 it), 17. these lugs being integral with it. The lobe 11 is provided with a tongue 18 and with a hole 20, the
1 lobe it) having a hole 19 which mates the hole 20. used in bottle washers, my more particular The blank shown in Fig. 7 has, up to this 3 point, the same construction as that of the made of such form as to be readily struck up fore the brush is vulcanized upon and into 1t; Flg. 3 1s a side elevation of the arm shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 1 is a section upon the line et4: of Fig. 1, looking in the direction 5 of the arrow, and showing the construction of the arm and brush after their completion; Fig. 5 is a plan view of a blank of sheet metal ready to be formed into an arm; Fi
6 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but shows a a slightly different type of arm upon which the brush is mounted and vulcanized; F i9". 7 is a plan view of a blank similar to that shown in Fig. 5, with the exception of a slight difference in the form of the arm, as indicated in Fig. 6; Fig. 8 is a side elevation of an arm made from the blank shown in Fig. 7, and Fig. 9 is a plan view of an arm showing another face thereof which is provided with a metallic bearing surface substantially (Jo-extensive with one-half of the blank used in the construction of the brush arm.
In setting forth my invention, 1 will first describe the sheet metal blank 9 shown in blank shown in Fig. There is, however, a slight difference. The blank shown in Fig. 7 is provided with a tongue 21 having substantially an L-shape and extending into a slot 22- also having substantially an L- shape; whereas, in the blank shown in Fig. 5, the tongue is perfectly straight and extends into a slot 21 of a shape similar to that of the tongue After the completion of the blank the lugs 15, 16, 17 are each bent over as shown at 16, 17 and the entire blank is doubled upon itself, the tongue 18 now being brought underneath the lug 15 and turned backwardly or upwardly, so as to form a hook 18 as will be understood from Fig. l. In doing this the lobe 11 is brought into direct engagement with the ends of the lugs 15, 16, 17. The bending of the blank is facilitated by the holes 13, and after the bending is completed, these holes appear as indicated at 13. These holes, together with the spacing lugs 15, 16, 17 and the tongue 18 afford good anchorages. The tongue 21 is now bent upwardly and turned over a little, as indicated in Fig. 6. The tongue 23 is bent straight outward from the arm, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. The arm being completed is now placed in the mold and a quantity of rubber is vulcanized upon it and into it in the form shown in 1, (i and 9, thereby being formed into a brush 25 provided with a thickened portion 2-6. The brush above described, when completed, is ready to be mounted upon the bottle washer ferrule. The holes 19, 20 are used for pivotally mounting the arm and brush. The tongue 21 is used for the purpose of applying a spring upon the brush arm. The tongue 23 is used merely as a limiting stop for preventing excessive travel of the arm.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a member of sheet material provided with lobes, and further provided with lugs integral with said lobes and extending therefrom, some of said lugs upon one of said lobes engaging the opposite lobe, and another of said lugs being bent partly around one of said first-mentioned lugs for the purpose of holding said lobes relatively to each other, and a brush of resilient material connected with said arm.
2. A device of the character described, comprising an arm of sheet metal provided with oppositely disposed lobes, one of said lobes having lugs integral with it and bent toward the other lobe for the purpose of engaging the latter, said last-mentioned lobe being provided with a tongue bent in the opposite direction to that of said lugs for the purpose of holding said lobes rigidly in relation to each other, and a brush of resilient material connected with said arm.
8. A device of the character described comprising a member of sheet material provided with lobes and bent back upon itself so as to bring said lobes substantially parallel to each other, one of said lobes having lugs integral with it and extending toward the opposite lobe for the purpose of holding said lobes in a predetermined position relatively to each other, and a brush of soft rubber vulcanized directly upon said member of sheet material.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES K. VOLCKENING.
