; residing at New York, inthe county of New York and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curling-Irons, of which the following is a specification. j

My invention relates, tojcurling irons and its object is to provide acu rling iron which will curl or wave the hair'in imitation of the 'natural'wave of the hair.

Another object of the invention is to overcome the liability of injuring the hair by breaking or scorching or burning it and this object is attained by slightly pressing the hair between heated irons arranged so as to :be non-contacting.

To these ends my invention is embodied in preferable form in the device hereinafter described and'illustrated in the accompanying drawings I In thesedrawings, Figure 1 is a side view; Fig. 2 is a section on line XX of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is airear view."

Referring to thedrawings illustrating my invention, 1 and Zrepresent the handles of the device, which handles are adapted to receive a sheathing or covering of wood, ivory, or similar material 3. This covering serves to protect thehand from theheat oi the fin gers oi'the iron, and it is'tightened around the handles by means of the band 4.

At one "end of. the handle 1, fingers 5 branch outwardly from the center of the handle, thereby forming a spacebetween the fingers. The handle 2is bent at a right an gle at 6 and thenbent again at a right angle to form a finger 7' running in a. direction parallel to the other fin em. The bend 6 of the handle 2 spaces the nger away from the finers of theihandl'e 1'; and by spreading the gersoi thehandle ,1 outwardly irom'its centerthe fingers of both handles are spaced apart; In spacing ythe fingers they are spaced so-as to be an equal distance from each other or at theangles of an equilateral triangle as shown in Fig. '5. The fingers are tapered atS'to formpoints 9 at their ends. These points allow thefingers to be pushed through thekhair without liability of pulling the hair or injuring the scalp. The handles are joined together by a pivot 10 and are adapted to work a on the incer principle. The pivoted'finger 7 is so coated with respect to'the fixed fingers, as to move between the same without contact against the other fingers.

The hair is caught between the fingers after they have been heated, and as the fingers are spaced apart, there is no danger of the hair being burned or scorched or broken and the hair is lightly pressed between the fingers to be curled to imitate the natural wave of the hair.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A curling iron consisting of two members, one of said members carrying a pair'ol fixed fingers and the other member comprising a single finger and ivotally connected to the first member and iiaving its handle portion bent at an angle to the plane of the pair of fingers so as to space the single finger from the pair of fingers, said pivoted member be ing so limited in its movement as not to be movable into or across the plane of the pair of fingers, substantially as described.

2. A curling iron having a part provided with two fixed and separated fingers, a finger pivoted to said part and having its handle portion crossing the other fingers, whereby when the handles are moved apart the fingers will be also moved apart, said fingers being so mounted that one of said fingers will be outside of the plane passing through the other two fingers when the handles are in closed position and to be noncontacting in the operation of curling, substantially as described.

A curling iron having a handle, said handle having fixed fingers thereon and spaced outwardly from one another, a pivoted handle engaging said first handle and having a portion bent at a right angle to the said first handle and crossing the same and having a single finger which is thereby spaced from the'fiXed fingers and carrying the movable finger outside of the plane passing through the other two fingers when the fingers are in closed position, said single finger being parallel to the fixed fingers, said fingers all being substantially spaced one from the I the handle to the third finger and at right being operable to move apart in non-interangles to said parts and extending across the secting paths by separating the handles other fingers so as to carry'said third finger whereby the hair may be curled by a nonaway from and opposite the space between pressing action, substantially as described.
