Be it known that I, JACOB R. Gnovn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philipsburg, in the county of Center and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Gripper ltt:uxlunent, of whicl'r the following is a specification.
This invention is an attachment in. the nature of a spring clamp to be placed on the ordinary gripper of a 3litt11 printing press, and its object is to tightly clanrtthe edge of the sheet to the platen, so that the printed sheet will not stick to the form.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an attachment of this kind which is simple in structure, and which can be easily applied and adjusted to clamp the sheet.
l z ith the foregoing objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of )arts, to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the drawing hereto annexed, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a platen and its grippers, showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view on the line 22 of 1. Fig. 3 is perspective of the device detached.
In the drawing, 5 denotes the platen of a printing press, and 6 are the grippers cooperating therewith in the usual manner for carrying the sheet to be printed to the form.
The attachment for the grippers is in the nature of a slide mounted thereon, and having a spring finger for amping the sheet to the platen. The derice is formed of a single piece of sheet steel, and comprises a flat body portion 7, fittii on one side of the gripper, and from which body portion, on one side thereof, hook-shaped, and oppositely presented fingers 8 are struck up The gripper is received between these fingers and the body portion. One set of fingers extends over one edge of the gripper, and the other set extends over the o osite edge, and the fingers then engage over that side of the gripper which faces the form.
The fingers 8 are formed by slitting the sheet, and bending up the tongues thus formed into the shape shown. Four of these tongues are provided, but their nu1nber is immaterial, and may be varied as long as the necessary hold on the gripper is had.
The device being made of sheet metal, it will be securely held in place on the gripper by the frictional contact of the fingers therewith. It is however free to be slid lengthwise on the gripper for the purpose of adjustment according to the size of the sheet, and, after it is moved to the desired position, it will be securely held on the gripper by the action of said fingers, which press against the gripper with sufficient force to hold the device in position thereon. The body portion projects beyond opposite edges of the gripper, and that portion projecting beyond the inner edge thereof, is bent away slightly from the gripper, and forms a spring finger 9. This finger projects in the direction of the platen, by reason of which, it will be seen that when the gripper moves into engagement with the platen, said finger will engage the edge of the sheet, and press the same tightly against the platen, so that said sheet will be tightly gripped and held, and its removal from the form is assured.
The device herein described, by reason of its extreme simplicity, can be cheaply manufactured, and it can be quickly adjusted on the gripper according to the size of the sheet. The finger 9 effectually prevents the sheet from sticking to the form, and, as it proects only short distance beyond the gripper, the device can be used when the margin of the sheet is scant. When not in use the device can be left on the gripper, so that it is at all times ready and in position for use.
