Be it known that I, CHARLES L. BEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and Stateof California, have invented a new and useful Rivet-Punch, of which the following is a specification, in such full and clear terms as willenable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same. I

This invention relates to a punch used fo the purpose of pushing the rivets out of chains, particularly automobile chains, al-

- though the device may be used for any similar purpose on any kind of a rivet.

An object of the invention is to produce a device that may be readily held in the hand when it is to be used and which willbe provided with a lever for turning the screw used for pushing the rivet out of the hole. I

Another object of the invention is to produce a punch which can be operated rapidly when the punch is not under pressure, and which can be operated with great pressure when it is necessary to break the bur on a rivet.

In the drawings, in which the same numeral of reference is applied to the same part throughout, Figure 1 is a sectional view of t e punch, Fig. 2 is 'a side view of the same, Fig. 3 is an edge view looking in the same direction as Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a view looking at the handle end of the punch, the handle being shown in section, .and Fig. 5 is a view of the punch from the opposite side of that shown in Fig. 2, the handles being shown separated.

The numeral 1 is applied to the handle on one side and 2 to the opposite handle, said handle 2 having a long dovetailed groove 3 therein in which slides a catch 10 having a spring end 11 in which 'is secured a small rivet 13 to hold the slide either in the operative or the inoperative position as will be-described.

the removal of the two handles from each other. The milled head 8' is cut deep enough so that the catch 10 will hold it tightly when it has been placed in the notches of the head, as shown in Fig. 2, when the two handles may be turned with respect to each other to move the rivet punch with great power to push out a rivet, the chain being secured between the two prongs 5 and the punch. When it is desired to move the punch rapidly, as when placin the same on a chain ready for punching it is not desirable to move the bolt so slowly as would be necessary with the two levers, at which time the spring 11 back so the milled head can be moved with I thev fingers till it is tight on the rivet after which the catch may be laced in the nocthes of the milled head and t e device is ready for the removal of the hardest rivet.

Having thus described my invention what ters Patent of the United States is as follows:

1. In a rivet punch, a head having a handle secured thereto, a second head secured to the first head and adapted to rotate in the plane of the first handle, a pair of prongs secured to the first head, a rivet punching bolt threaded in the second head and means on the second head for turning'the bolt to cause it to move toward the prongs.

2. In a rivet punch, a head having a handle secured thereto, a second head secured to the first head and adapted to rotate in the plane of the first head and handle, a pair of prongs secured to the first head and at a distance therefrom, a bolt screwed into the first head and having a rivet punching oint and a milled head, a catch slidable in t e second handle and adapted to take in the milling of the head of said bolt, and means to secure said slide in the operative and inoperative positions.

3. In a rivet punch, a head having a bandle and a pair of prongs at a distance from the head, a bolt screwed into said head and having a rivet unching point and a milled and adapted to rotate in the plane of the handle thereon said second head having a handle with a long dovetailed slot therein, a slide adapted to move in said slot to secure in the operative and the inoperative positions.
