IMPROVEMENT IN LIFTING-J'ACKS.
The Schedule referred to these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, XVILLIAM BRADY and CHRIST. H. BRADY, of Mount Joy, in the county of Lancaster, and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Lifter; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying-drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. i
The nature of our invention consists in'the con struction and arrangement of a device for lifting stoves.
In'order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine;
Figure 2 is a perspective of a handle, which may be substituted yin place of the one shown in lig. l; and
Figure 3 is a plan view of the lifting-rack and movable jaws. A represents a bed-plate or bar of suitable length, which, at its rear end, is bent upward, and then forward, in the shape shown in lig. 1, so as to be nearly on a line with the lower front end.
It is toen bent upwards, forming a perpendicular standard, B.
' It will be seen that the dat or straight portion of l the bar A forms the'hed-piece of the whole machine, and is cast in one piece with the standard B, which latter is provided witha slot of suitable length.
In this slot is inserted a block, C, projecting from the rear side of a har, D, and which bar is heldin front of the standard B by means of alpin, a, which passes through the block C, in rear of said standard.
The bar D, which isf perpendicular, can thus be raised or lowered at will', as the block G slides up and down in the slot ofthe standard B.
The bar D 'is provided on its front side with a series of teeth, hb, and on each side, at the base of said teeth, with a Bange, c, which llange, at the .lower end of the bar, extends to the rear side ofthe saine.
On the har D, the jaws E E are placed, each of said jaws? being grooved near its rear end,'to allowthe ange c to pass through the saine, and extending a suitable distance in front of the bar.
lI he jaws EYE are riveted, or otherwise secured together, and on their under side provided with a projection, d, which catches on the teeth b The clamp, thus formed of the two jaws E E, can. be placed at any point desired on the bar D, and held portion of the bar A, are placed two ears, e, between which a lever, F, is pivcted, the frontend of said lever extending under the block4 G, and the rear end extending a suitable distance, andi'ornling a handle for operating the machine.
By raising the lower end of the lever F, it will be` seen the bar D and block O are allowed to slide down l as far as the slot in the standard B will allow.
`By theusetting the clamp or jaws E under the stove, and bearing down -on the leverF, the stove will be raised up; and when thus raised up, it may be hold as long as desired by a loop, h, pivoted or hinged at a suitable point ou the bar A, which loop is hooked to a hook, m, on the under side of the lever, thus preventing the lever from raising up.
' Instead of using the lever F for raising the toothed bar, we may use an auger-shapedcam, G, provided with a handle, H, represented in fig. 2.
The'bar A, being provided with a pin at a suitable distance from the slotted standard B, and the cam G having a hole through its centre, the cam is placed around said pin so that the auger-tlange of the cam projects under the block C. By now turning thehanl dle H, the block and lifter will be raised bythe augerflangeA of said cani G.
Having thus fully described our invention- What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The bed-piece A, constructed substantially in to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein
