Application filed December 16, 1908.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZAGHARY TAYLOR COX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of the present invention to improve, generally, that class of gates which are arranged to slide in the direction of their length, and are to be operated from a distance, the object in view being more specific ally to support the gate so that its sliding movement may be accomplished with a minimum expenditure of energy, and, at the same time, to so construct the gate and its supporting means, that the gate Will not be liable to become caught.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, to be set forth in the specific description which is to follow, and in the appended claim, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which latter?- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gate constructed in accordance with this invention: Fig. 2 is a detail view in elevation, and partly in section, showing a portion of the gate-moving mechanism: Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but looking in a direction at right angles to the plane of Fig. 2, and illustrating also the arrangement and construction of the gate-moving mechanism: Fig. 4 is a top plan view, partly in section, illustrating a portion of the means for guiding the gate in its sliding movement.
In the drawings the gate proper is shown as comprised of a plurality of vertical stiles 5 and diagonal braces 6, all of which are secured at their ends or their intermediate portions or both, between pairs of longitudinal bars 7, the outer faces of these bars determining the thickness of the gate, so that means for guiding the gate in its sliding movement may bear against said faces of the bars, and no obstruction will be offered to the movement of the gate, as stated.

' port a cap beam 10, which extends, to a con siderable distance, forwardly and rear wardly beyond the said posts, or, in other words, in a plane at right angles to the plane of the gate itself, this cap beam being held firmly in position by means of braces 11, which are connected, at their upper ends, to the beam adjacent its ends, and at their lower ends to the posts 8. The cap beam 10 is intended to support the gate-operating means at a distance from the gate, in a manner which will be presently fully described, so that the gate may be operated from a vehicle or horse-back.
In addition to the pair of posts 8, there are provided pairs 12 and 13, these posts being sunk into the ground at their lower ends, and connected at their upper ends and held in spaced parallel relation by means of suitable spacing blocks 14, which also serve the function of preventing upward displacement of the gate. Journaled between the posts of each pair, 8, 12 and 18, adjacent the lower ends thereof, is a broad cylindrical roller 15, and these rollers 15 support the gate for sliding movement owing to the fact that the lower edges of the lower pair of longitudinal bars 7 rest directly upon said rollers, and each of the posts 8, 12 and 13 carries one or more antifriction rollers 16, which bear against the outer faces of the horizontal bars 7 of the gate, and guide the gate in its sliding movement, it being understood that the rollers upon the posts of each pair are arranged so as to bear at corresponding points upon the bars.
The movement of the gate to closed position is limited by a suitable latch-post comprised of a pair of spaced uprights 17, which are connected in spaced relation at their upper ends by means of a suitable cross cleat 18, and to which are secured the ends of the fence bars 1.9, the fence bars being secured upon the outer face of one of the posts, so that the space between the posts is left clear to receive one end. of the gate when the gate is slid to closed position, this reception of I said end of the gate between the spaced posts serving to prevent lateral movement of the gate, and consequent injury thereto and to its supporting means.
Journaled in suitable bearings upon the posts 8, at a point preferably directly in a plane beneath the upper pair of longitudinal bars 7 of the gate, is a shaft 20, upon which is fixed, at a point between the posts 8, a pulley 21, and wound about this pulley several times, and stretched in a direction longitudinally of the gate, and connected at its ends to two of the vertical stiles thereof, is a cable 22, it being understood that rotation of the shaft, and consequently of the pulley, will result in the gate being slid in one direction or the other, according to the direction of rotation of the said shaft. Sprocket gears 23 l are also fixed upon the shaft 20, at the ends thereof, and, trained beneath each of these gears, is a sprocket chain 24, to the ends of which are connected cables or other flexible pull connections 25, which are passed over pulleys 26-, at the upper ends of the respective posts 8, and other pulleys 27 at the corresponding ends of the cap beam 10, these latter pulleys being suspended from suitable arms 27 arranged at the said endsof the cap beam. A handle 28, of any suitable construction, is provided at the lower extremity of the depending portion of each of the cables 25, and, by grasping and pulling upon one or the other of the cables at one side of the gate, the gate may be slid to open or closed position, depending upon which one of the cables is pulled, it being understood that this movement of the gate is had-through the rotation of the shaft and the pulley 21 mounted thereon.
From the foregoing description of my invention, it will be seen that 1' haveprovided a gate of the class described. which is so supported'for sliding movement that it will not be liable to become caught, and may be slid with a minimum expenditure of energy.

In a gate, pairs of spaced posts, a gate ar ranged to slide between said posts, said gate being comprised of vertical stiles and longitudinal bars arranged in pairs one above the other and receiving the stiles therebetween, a roller journaled between the posts of each pair and having the lower edges of the lower pair of bars resting thereon whereby said gate is supported for such sliding movement between the posts, and rollers carried by the said posts and bearing against the said longitudinal bars whereby to guide the gate in its sliding movement, each post of each pair carrying a plurality of said rollers arranged so that one roller upon each post will bear against one of the longitudinal bars at the corresponding side of the gate.
