GATE.
APPLICATION FILED 13130.8, 1904.

PATENT- OFFICE.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,433, dated May 23, 1905. Application filed December 8, 1904. Serial No. 236,025.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN HoLs'rn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Massena, in the county of Cass and'State of Iowa,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to gates, and more particularly to that class of gates adapted to be raised and lowered, one of the objects being to provide a gate of the character described that is capable of being opened either way and that is simple and inexpensive in construction, durable, and easy of operation.
A further object of my invention is to pro vide a gate of the character described that can be raised or lowered while shut or opened and one that while lowered to the ground when shut may be raised so as to avoid snow,
brush, or other obstacles during the opening.
process and may then be lowered to the ground and rest thereon, so that it will not blow or swing shut. v
The structural features of my invention, by means of which these objects are attained, will be made clear by an examination of the specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which the same reference-numerals indicate corresponding parts throughout, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the gate as it appears when lowered, and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the gate raised.
1 designates the main frame of the gate, and 2 a vertical rod pivotally mounted in the fastenings 3, secured to a suitable gate-post 4t.
5 designates a metal strip secured to the gate-frame, near the top thereof, and having journaled in suitable bearings therein a roller 6, said roller being in engagement with the rod 2 on the inside thereof. 7 designates a brace engaging the rod 2 in order to hold the gate-frame away from the rod, so that said roller 6 will remain continuously in engagement with said. rod. 8 designates a metal strip secured to the gate-frame, near the bottom thereof, and having journaled in suitable bearings therein a roller 9, said roller engag- 10 designates ing the outside of said rod 2.
a brace pivotally mounted on the rod and 11.
another brace, one end of which. is secured to the upper end of said brace 10 and the other end of which is grooved to engage with said rod 2. 12 designates a bar pivoted on the brace 10, having the outer end arranged to engage with the notches 13 in the upright 14, which forms the outer end of said gate-frame, and 15 designates a suitable weight placed near the outer end of said bar 12 to aid in lowering said bar. 16 designates a chain secured to said bar 12, near the inner end thereof, said chain being arranged to fasten around one of the cross-bars of said gate.
In operation the gate is raised by removing the-outer end of the bar 12 from the notch in which it is secured and bearing down upon said bar. This tends to elevate the inner end of said bar, and the chain 16, being wrapped around one of the cross-bars of the gate-frame, carries the gate with it, and by means of said notches 13 it will readily be observed that the gate may be secured at any desired height by placing the lower end of notch on the upright 14.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a gate, a gate-frame, a vertical post, rollers secured to the frame and arranged to travel on the post, a brace pivotally mounted on the post, a weighted bar pivotally mounted on the brace, notches in the gate-frame arranged to engage with one end of the weighted bar and to hold same in position when raised or lowered, a brace rigidly mounted on the gate-frame and adapted to engage with the vertical post and hold the frame in operative position, a brace rigidly secured to the pivotally-mounted brace and adapted to engage with the vertical post and hold said pivotallymounted brace in operative position, and a connection between the weighted bar and the gate-frame, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERMAN HOLSTE.
