ALCOHOL-GAS BURNER.
Application filed November 27, 1908.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WEsLEY E. CoonRAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montgomery, in the county of Montgomery and State of Alabama, have invented cer- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1909.
Serial N0. 264,565.
tain new and useful Improvements in Alcospace is provided between the tube 8 and the hol-Gas Burners, of which the following is a specification.
The purpose in view is to supply a burner intended most especially for consuming a volatile liquid or fuel, such as alcohol for generating heat to be applied in various ways, particularly for warming irons commonly employed for pressing garments and for laundering clothes, the burner being compact and embodying in a single structure all the essential parts for containing a quantity of liquid fuel for generating gas and for consuming the gas.
For a full understanding of-the invention and the merits thereof and-also to. acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be h ad to the following description and the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a burner embodying the invention, the tank being in full lines Fig. 2 is a section on the line a:-:v of Fig. 1, looking to the left; and, Fig. 3 is a section on the line g z of Fig. 1, looking to the right.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The form of burner illustrated is particularly designed for sad irons and it is to be understood that changes may be made without departing from the invention when adapting the same to meet varying condi tions or for other purposes.
The burner 1 consists of a tube and is provided along a side with minute openings forming outlets, through which the gas issues and is consumed. One end of the burner tube is closed by means of a plug 2 and the opposite end is provided with a mixer 3. The burner may be of any length or diameter.
A generator 4 is placed along the side of the burner and is connected thereto and consists of a tube which is closed at one end by means of a plug 5 and having a cap 6 at the opposite end formed. with an internal threaded opening in which is fitted a needle l 1 l l opening of the mixer 3 for the entrance of air to mix with the gas to produce a mixture to insure perfect combustion and the production of tongues of flame of maximum intensity. A tube 9 is located centrally within the generator and is provided in its length with a series of minute openings. A plug 1.0 fitted within the generator receives an end portion of the tube 9 and supports the same. The plug 10 is'spaced some distance from the cap 6 thereby leaving a space 11 for the collectionof a quantity of gas. The needle valve 7 is adapted to close the dis -.charge .end of the tube 9, thereby regulating the supply of gas to the burner. Wire gauze or other material 11 surrounds the tube 9 and fills the space between it and the generator tube 4, so as to retard the flow of the alcohol or liquid fuel and insure effective action of the heat thereon, so as to produce gas.
A tank or reservoir 12 is adapted to receive a quantity of alcohol or other liquid. fuel and is connected by means of a tube 13 with an end portion of the generator 4. The tube 13 curves in its length and is connected at its lower end by means of a nipple 14 with the generator 4. A plug 15 closes the lower end of the tube 13 thereby admitting of access being had to the tube 1.3 for any purpose. The tube 13 like the generator tube 4 is filled with wire gauze or other material commonly employedv in burners of this type.
In the practical operation of the burner, the parts being assembled substantially as herein disclosed, the valve 7 being open and the burner having been previously heated sufliciently to convert a portion of the alcohol or other liquid fuel into gas, the latter passes from the generator through the tube 9 into the space 11 thence through tube 8 into the burner and is consumed at the outlets thereof. So long as the gas is consumed the supply from the reservoir of the generator is converted into gas and supplies the burner, thereby maintaining the device in operation until the supply is cut off either by the reservoir becoming exhausted or the valve 7 being closed.
It will be observed that the burner is complete in all of its appointments, the structure embodying means for containing a quantity of alcohol, a generator for converting the same into gas and a burner for consuming the gas after the same has been generated. The structure is compact, light and comp aratively cheap and in operation is certain and effective.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. In combination a burner provided at one end with a mixer, a generator adjacent to said burner, a tube arranged within the generator, filling surrounding said tube, the generator having a space at one end, a tube connecting said space at one end of the generator with the mixer, and a valve operating in the end of the generator and across the space thereof and adapted to control the outflow of gas from the tube located within said generator.
2. In combination a burner closed at one end and provided at its opposite end with a mixer, a generator adjacent to said burner and closed at opposite ends, a tube arranged within the generator and terminating a distance from the closed ends thereof and having perforations throughout its length, filling surrounding said tube, means for closing the space formed between said tube and generator and confining said filling, means for supplying a volatile liquid fuel to the generator near the closing means between said tube and generator, a valve operating in the closed end of the generator and adapted to close the adjacent end of the tube located within the generator, and a connection establishing communication between the aforementioned mixer and the space formed between the ing the space at one end of the generator with said mixer, and a valve threaded into the outer end of the generator and extending across the space therein and adapted to close the end of the tube fitted in said plug;
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature 1 in presence of two witnesses.
WESLEY COCHRAN.
