' coLLnPsIBLE REGEPTACLE.
` To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Mon'roN J. Sir-Airman, a citizen of therUnited' States, and a resident of Brookline, inl the county oi' Norfolk ,and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Collapsible. Receptacles, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings,is a specification) like numerals on the drawings re resenting like parts.
his invention relates to receptacles prefi erably lto'rmed from a blank of suitable material suitably sha ed and )referably scored to permit-the rea tacle.- l
kIn order that the principles of the inven tion may be readily understood, I. have dis# closed a single type or embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings, 'wherein- Figure. 1 isa plan'view of 'thepreferrcd y assem lmg of the recepshape of blank from which the receptacle is formed; Fig. 2 is a plan View ol' said blank when partially assembled ,but collapsed; Fig. 3 is a View similar to F1g. 52, but representing a dillierent positioning of the parts,
the blank from which the receptacle is Constructed is of any suitable material and preferably of card board. Herein said blank is scored along the lines 2 2 and 3-3 to pref' sent a base L and two pairs of sidewalls 5 .5 and 6-6 respectively. 'Between the meinbers of said pairs oi" side walls are intervening corner members 7 diagonally scored upon the lines 8 to permitthe int'olding of said corner members during the assembling of he box. The corner members 7 are non-connected or non-fastened to each other or to.
the walls olthe receptacle.
Any suitable rneans 'may tachably to connect the side walls 5-5. Herein, for the purpose, I have represented them as provided with extensions 9-9, one
of which vis rovided with parallel slots 10-410 and t e other with oppositely exy Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 4,
be employed de- Patented May 18, 1909.
1908. Serial No. 436,603:
adapted to engage with sail slots. Prefer- 'ably the blank is scored alongthe lines ol' vunion 12--12 of the side walls 5 and the AeX tensions 9. Preferably the receptacle is provided -with a suitable cover herein coin sisting oi'l cover ineinl-ers 13--13 having parallel s ots l4-14 and the other with opp'ositely extended tongues 15-15 struck up along the lines of union 1(316 oi the cover members' lf3-#13 and the side walls (SHG.
It is apparent that the rece tacle may be supplied in bulk to the purchaser and stored by sucpcrimposing them latwise, as represente in F1g. 1. chant, may conveniently, prior to the days sales, partially assemble such number of blanks as he may estimate may be lrequired y for the days sales by interengaging the members 9 9 in the manner previously described and as represented in Fig. 2, the partially assembledre-ceptacles being then collapsed as there shown and su eriinposed. `When a receptacle is needed or use, the, partially as- 'hands bene ath the side walls 6-'-6 and folding them into upright position, as indicated in Fig. 3. said walls into upright position but also inmoves into an upright position the side walls 5-5. By? a single movement of the 'hands represented in Fig. 2 to its assembled )osition. The desired article having been p aced therein, the cover members, if provided, are interengaged by means ofthe tongues 1'5 and slots 14 and the operation is completed.
In 3, I have represented a partially assembled blank wherein the side walls 5-5 are collapsed inwardly rather than one outwardly and one inwardly, as represented lin in Fig.2. In collapsing the receptacle in'to the position shown in Fig. 4-,it will bc apparent that the tongues 11.--'-11 slide longitudinally in the slots lll-JO, whichth'eretore should be of suilicient length to permit said .movementv In certain s1zes of the receptacle, and in receptacles having certain proportioning of parts, I prefer lto collapse the 1 tending tongues il struck up therefrom and adapted to various uses. The lanks may be i sembled blank is grasped by placing theiolds the corner members 7 and in so doing A the box is brought from its collapsedposition suitablepmeans for -interengagementf Preierably I provide one. of said members with therefrom. The blank is preferably scored 'A The purchaser, if a iner- Y '85 .Such manipulation not onlymovcs ysaid tongues.
-rece taolo into the position shown in Fig. 3,
as, or exam le, in those sizes wherein the length of the 4 between the lines ofsc'ori 134-3, is more greatly inv excess of the hel ht of the walls 5*5 than is represented inl ig 2. Preferably the member 9 wherein thetongues ll--l are formed is slotted beyond- 'the bases oi" said tongues represented at i7 in Fig. l, th avoidingthe tearing ot' the material of the blank when manipulating lt vis apparent that the Corner members .7 not only serve a mea s whereby the assembling movementof the Walls 6--6 is transferred to the side Walls 5-45, but they 'serve to reinforce the folded receptacle.
Having thi s described one typo or embodiment of the invention, l desire it to be understood that although speoirlov terms are employed, they aroused in, a vgeneric and descriptive fsenso and not for purposes of limitation, thosoo e oi" the invention being set forth in thofol owing claims.
