To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CALVIN KEITH and GEORGE F. LIs'rEE, citizens of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ghio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Hinges; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to universal lock hinges.
It is designed as an improvement on the hinges shown and described in our U. S. Patents No. 788,051, dated April 25, 1905, and No. 865,911, dated Sept. 10, 1907, and it has for its object to produce a hinge which is simple in construction, cheap of manufacture and durable.
FFhereas a door equipped nary spring hinge is easily opened at the start and exerts greater resistance as it approaches an open position, a door on which our hinge is placed is held most rigid when shut and becomes easier to push as it opens and nears a wide open position, that is, from its closed position. Our hinge will, therefore, prevent a door from being blown open by being opened by small animals such as cats and dogs.

In the accompanying drawing, illustrating the preferred embodiment of our invention: Figure 1 is a broken elevation of a door partly in section to show the construction of our hinge applied. thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the hinge in an open position, as when the door is open to an angle of 90. Fig. 3 is a broken sectional view on the line of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the floor plate, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the jaws.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 designates the door, 2 the floor and 8 the door frame.
As the upper hinge is constructed similarly to that shown and described in our U. S. Patent No. 865,911, dated Sept. 10, 1907, and forms no part of our present with an ordi the wind or from i invention, we deem it unnecessary to del scribe it in this specification.

it being provided with a curved groove 5 I in its upper face and a longitudinal rib preferably flush with the surfaces of the plate. A frame 7 is attached to one of the lower corners of the door, as shown. A disk or plate 8, fixed to a pin 9, is mounted above the opening in said frame, said pin l extending through said opening and being 1 slotted, as at 10, to engage the rib on the floor plate. The lower end of said pin is rounded to conform to the curved groove in the floor plate as is illustrated at 11 in 1 Figs. 1 and 3. To the upper surface of the disk or plate 8, near opposite sides thereof,
are mounted roller-sleeves 12 around screws 13. If desired, a yoke or cross bar 1 1 may be secured to the disk and provided with l oppositely extending arms 15 projecting 1 above said roller sleeves like in our Patent 1 No. 788,051, dated April 25, 1905. 1 around the pin 9 there is mounted a sleeve 16 slotted at 17 and rounded at 18 to engage the rib and fit the groove of the floor plate. Said sleeve is secured to the pin by a locking pin 19. As illustrated in 3, this sleeve is reduced at 20, the upper portion 21 being formed like a trun cated cone. Said reduced portion projects into a cylindrical opening 22 extending upward in the base plate of the frame 7 and ending in a shoulder 28. Balhbearings 2 1 are interposed between the cone 21 and the shoulder 23.
From the sides of the rectangular portion of the frame 7 lugs 25 extend inwardly and form seats for two coiled springs 26. -T-shaped piece 27 has the ends of its head bored from beneath to house the upper ends of said springs, while the stem extends down between the lugs 25 and is pivotally connected to links 29. Said links extend upward and toward the opposite sides of the frame and are also pivotally connected to the upper ends of the jaws 29 Said jaws have grooved pivot bearings upon projections 30 on the sides of the frames and their lower ends forcibly engage the roller sleeves 1.2 by reason of the pressure exerted by the coiled springs tending to raise said Tshaped piece and extend the links 29. The gripping end of each jaw is provided with a central groove or notch 31 adapted to fit one of the roller sleeves.
The hinge is shown in Fig. 1 in a closed position. It will be readily seen that when the door is open the lower ends of the jaws will be forced apart by the roller sleeves until said sleeves engage the central grooves in said jaws when the door will be locked or held in that position until it is pushed back to its former position or farther around.
While We have shown our hinge arranged at one side of the door so that it can open either way, said hinge may be used on revolving doors in which case the door may be held in each 90 of its circle of movement. It will be understood that the action of the coiled springs on the T-shaped piece and links will have the same effect on the jaws as the spring shown in our Patent No. 788,051. The lower or gripping ends of the jaws engage both roller sleeves when the hinge is in a closed position while when in an open position each jaw engages only one of said sleeves.
We claim:
1. A hinge comprising a frame adapted to be secured to a door, a pin extending from said frame and secured to a fixture, two roller-sleeves mounted diametrically opposite each other on the inner end of said pin, a pair of pivoted jaws adapted to engage said roller-sleeves separately or both at the same time, links pivotally connected to the other ends of said jaws and to each other, and a spring-pressed piece connected to said links'and adapted to hold them in position to cause said jaws to forcibly engage said roller-sleeves.
2. A hinge comprising a frame adapted to be secured to a door, a pin extending from said frame and secured to a fixture, two roller-sleeves mounted diametrically opposite each other on the inner end of said pin, a pair of pivoted jaws adapted to engage said roller-sleeves separately or both at the same time, links pivotally connected to the other ends of said jaws and to each other, a lug on said frame, a coiled spring seated on said lug, a headed piece connected to said links and having its head engaged by said spring whereby said links are held in position to cause said jaws to forcibly engage said roller-sleeves.
3. A hinge comprising a frame adapted to be secured to a door, a pin extending from said frame and secured to a fixture, two roller-sleeves mounted diametrically opposite each other on the inner end of said pin, a pair of pivoted jaws adapted to engage said roller-sleeves separately or both at the same time, links pivotally connected to the other ends of said jaws and to each other, a lug on said frame, a coiled spring seated on said lug, a headed piece connected to said links and having a socket in its head to house the other end of said spring whereby said links are held in position to cause said jaws to forcibly engage said roller-sleeves.
4:. A hinge comprising a frame adapted to be secured to a door, a pin extending from said frame and secured to a fixture, two roller-sleeves mounted diametrically opposite each other on the inner end of said pin, a pair of pivoted jaws adapted to engage sald roller-sleeves separately or both at the same time, links pivotally connected to the other ends of said jaws and to each other, lugs on said frame, coiled springs seated on said lugs, a T-shaped piece having its stem connected to said links and having its head engaged by said springs whereby said links are held in position to cause said jaws to forcibly engage said roller-sleeves.
5. A h' be secured to a'door, a pin extending from said frame, a floor plate having a rounded groove therein and a rib extending across said groove, said pin being round at its lower end and slotted to fit said groove and rib of said floor plate, two roller-sleeves mounted diametrically opposite each other on the inner end of said pin, a pair of? spring actuated jaws adapted to engage said roller sleeves separately or both at the same time, a truncated-cone-shaped part carried by said pin and extending into a cylindrical opening in said frame, said opening terminating in mge comprising a frame adapted to V a shoulder, and ball-bearings interposed between said shoulder and cone.
