Description

UNTTEI) STATES PATENT OFFTC.
HEZEKIAH CONANT, OF IVORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
INSTRUMENT FOR LASTING BOOTS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 9,213, dated August 24, 1852.
To all rwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEZEKIAH CONANT, of Vorcester, in the count-y of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Implement .Called the Lasting Pincers; and I hereby declare the following to be a true and clear description thereof, reference being had to the drawings herewith presented, which drawings constitute a part of said description viz:
The peculiar form of these instruments so far as it affects the relative motion of the parts is of some importance, but'the form of each part may be varied according to the taste of the manufacturer, or the wants of the workman who uses them. It may be 0b'- served the step, a piece of metal marked (S) is merely a saddle for the last, and support for the pincers to work from and may be connected to the jaws of the pincers, by the two levers (L, L,) in such position as to give the right motion to the teeth at the ends of the jaws, (J J). In using this instrument the step (S) is placed on the sole of the last, then by opening the pincers the teeth descend in a curve on each side of the Y last and by being hooked into each side of the upper leather they bring up the two sides with equal tension and press the leather fair on the instep.
To use them the upper leather is drawn over the last at the toe and the insole fastened in the usual manner; then with the last bottom upward place the step in the hollow of the foot and opening the handles the jaws will open and descend below the edges of the leather, and by shutting them the points are found sufficient to hold onto the leather and draw it taut over the instep and snug in the hollow or shank of the boot s0 that it may be fastened in the usual way. They are self adjusting, combining utility with durability, convenience with power, and not omitting simplicity and cheapness.
I/Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ish
The combination of the two levers (L, L,) connected together and connected to the aws (J, J,) also connected to the step (S), by which combination, (one opening the pin-- cers) the simultaneous motion of the two jaws is guided, so as to take hold, of both sides, of the leather, and by pressing the handles toward each other, bring up the leather, with equal tension on both sides. I claim this for the purpose, and in form substantially, as above described.
VIn testimony whereof, I hereto subscribe my name, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HEZEKIAH CONANT.
Witnesses HENRY CHAPIN, ADISS THAYER.
