THOMAS GARE, OF STOCKPORT, ENGLAND.
LASTING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,458, dated September 5, 1899.
Application filed December 20, 1897. Sen'al No. 662,704.
To all whom.- it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS GARE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Stockport, in the county of Chester, Kingdom of Great Britain, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Lasting Coverings for the Feet, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Great Britain, No. 1,085, hearing date of January 16, 1896, and No. 21,800, bearing date of October 2, 1896; in France, No. 260,205, hearing date of October 5, 1896; in Belgium, No. 125,813, bearing dated of January 19, 1897; in Austria, No. 17/510, bearing date of February 17, 1897, and in Switzerland, No.13,704:, bearing date of January 20, 1897,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in machines for lasting coverings for the feet wherein spring-blades are employed to draw and press the upper around the toe and heel of the last, the object being to reduce the cost of such machines and render the operation of lasting more expeditious. My improved lasting-machine will also produce superior work and such as hitherto required hand laborfor instance, such as veldt schoens, nursery, and the like work. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a sectional side View, Fig. 2 a plan, and Fig. 3 an end view, of my improved lasting-machine, showing the working parts in position before the last has been depressed. Fig. 4 is a side view of the machine, showing the working parts after the last has been depressed; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modification of my invention.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the figures generally, a is the frame, I) the table-socket, c the table, (:1 the last-support, c the last, f the upper, and g g the spring-blades, of my improved lastingmachine.
In carrying out my invention and referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3, and4= in the present instance I employthe socket 1) upon a pillar a, and the table 0, having a hollow pivot c, is arranged to swivel in the said socket. Upon the table 0 in or about the middle I fix the bracket 71,
(N0 model.)
in which is adapted to rise and fall a vertical shaft, hereinbefore called the last-support, upon the upper end'of which I place the last 6, which receives the upper to be lasted.
- Below the fore part of the last I fix upon the table a a plate 1', furnished at each side with two studs 7 each carrying a block to which are pivoted the spring-blades g, another spring-blade g being secured to a bracket rendered longitudinally adjustable below the fore part of the last e. The upper ends of these spring-blades I pivot to a steel or other flexible spring-band 70, which is somewhat U-fashioned and may be lined or partly covered with leather or other suitable yielding material, and is adapted to grip the whole fore part'of the upper when pressed between, and thus press and draw the upper around the last.- In lieu of the steel band it a thick strip of leather onlymay be used at the ends of the flexible springband to cause the upper to be pressed and drawn by the band 70 around the sides of the last and the outer end to accommodate itself to the various shapes of toesviz., round, square, or pointedwhich is of great importance and could not be attained without the use ofthe said end spring-blades. end spring-blades g are each placed under the influence of a spring Z, which has a tendency to draw the flexible spring-band 7a toward the upper when the last eis depressed between the flexible spring-band it. Adjacent to the blade g a pillar k is rendered longitudinally adjustable, which serves as a rest for the toe of the last when depressed and as an abutment for the flexible springband 71;.
Below the heel end of the last is pivoted to the bracket it another spring-blade m carrying at its upper end a pair of wipers n. The action of the last-named spring-bade is controlled by a screw-threaded spindle m, carried by the bracket 0.
The last-support d is furnished with a collar cl, carrying an antifriction-bowl 01 and to the bracket 72. is pivoted a cam-lever h, by means of which the last and upper are raised out of the flexible spring band k by hand. The last and upper are depressed between the said flexible spring-band by means of a clamp- The lever 19, secured to a stud p, mounted in a pillar q, secured to the plate 1', which lever and stud are actuated by means of a handle 19 secured to the latter. The said clamp-lever is retained in the desired position by a pawl r in gear with aratchet-wheel 7", secured upon the stud p. In the pillar q is employed a slide q, actuated bya hand-lever Q2 and furnished at its inner end with a plate g which serves to hold the upper in position at the toe after having been broken in.
In connection with the Waist of the last I employ two plates 3, adapted to draw in and hold in position the upper at the waist, as well as to support the upper when turned on. Each of these plates is mounted adj ustably in a pin .9, rendered vertically adjustable in a block t, secured to the upper end of a springblade 25. The lower ends of these springblades are secured to arms 29, hinged to the bracket h and adapted to be raised and lowered by means of two cams t secured upon a shaft t mounted in the bracket h and actuated by a handle i For the breaking and drawing in of the upper at the toe I employ a wire or other flexible loop f, which loop performs this operation much quicker and more uniformly than it is possible by means of wipers, as it will accommodate itself to the various thicknesses and shapes of uppers and lasts. 'This loop I draw in by means of a drum to, secured to a pin 11/, mounted in the bracket 0, situated behind the heel of the last, the ends of the said loop being secured to the said drum and the latter actuated by means of a handle n secured to the pin u. In order to permit of drawing in the said loop gradually and retaining it in any desired position, the pin it is furnished with a ratchet-wheel v, in which engages apawl i2, lockedin position by means ofaspring-catch v The plates 8 maybe each furnished with an eye 8 in which the loopf is guided.
The machine described is manipulated as follows: Assuming the last-support cl is in its normal or upper position, the last-clamp p thrown back, and a last furnished with an upper has been placed upon the last-support d, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the last-clamp 10 is placed upon the last, and the latter is then depressed between the flexible spring-band by means of the handle 13 until its toe abuts against the rest It, as shown in Fig. a, during which operation the upper is pressed tightly around the contour of the fore part of the last by the said flexible springband ready for being broken or drawn in by the loop f, which is then placed over the respective partof the upper and drawn in by the mechanism described. The heel part of the upper is then brought in by the wipers n, and the waist-rests s are brought in by raising the same by means of the handle i and eccentrics t After the operation of lasting has been completed in the usual way the waistrests s, wipers n, last-clamp p, and loop f are returned to their normal positions and the last and upper raised out of the flexible spring-band 70 by means of the lever h, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. It will thus be readily understood that the use of the said loop and waist-rests greatly facilitate the lasting, as in veldt schoens the upper can be drawn over farther in and blocked outward over the said loop, while in welted work the loop draws the upper into the channel of the insole and no tacks are required for holding down the upper, as a bridling end can be applied before the loop is released.
Referring to Fig. 5, for some classes of work I may secure over the flexible springband 7c a piece of sheet-rubber or other elastic material 10, which in pressing the upper against the same stretches around the fore part of the upper, as shown in dotted lines, and provides additional grip, so as to draw the upper extra tight around the last.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is r l. A lasting-machine, comprising the table, the vertically-movable last-support, the plurality of spring-arms extending upward from the table, and the flexible band carried by the upper ends of said spring-arms the inner part of the spring-arms being adapted to control the outward movement of the ends of the flexible baud, substantially as described.
2. A lasting-machine comprising the table, the vertically-movable last-support, the plurality of spring arms extending upwardly from the table around the forward end of the last, the flexible band carried by the upper edges of said spring-arms, and the springs Z connected to the rearmost of said springs and exerting tension thereon longitudinally of the last, substantially as described.
3. A lasting-machine comprising the table, the vertically movable last support, the spring-arms extending upward therefrom in proximity to the front of the last, the flexible band connecting the upper ends of said arms, the Wire loop f adapted to draw or break in the upper, and the reel for operating said loop, substantially as described.
4. In a lasting-machine, the combination with the table or frame, of the vertical springblades 25, the blockst carried at the upper ends thereof, the rod vertically adjustable in said blocks, blocks 8 carried by said rods, horizontally-adjustable rods carried by said blocks 5 and plates 8 carried by said horizontallyadjustable rods, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
' THOMAS GARE.
