Be it known that I, JAY W.

cine, county of Racine, and State of W'isconsin, have invented new and useful Im rovements in Book-Marks, of which the fol owing is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in book marks.

The object of my invention is among other things to provide a convenient, inexpensive and efiicient means of producing and connecting together a plurality of index marks by which a number of different pages of a book may be indicated, the books readily opened at the indicated points while the particular-line or paragraph of such page may also be indicated while such index marks may be readily removed to another book or changed from one place to another in the same book.

My invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings in which, i

It will be understood. that the clamping members 9 are formed integrally with the upper end of the member 8 and that it partially incloses the opposing member 7, also that the members 10 are formed integrally with the member 7 and partially inclose's the member 8 as indicated in Figs. 4 and 5. That the clamping members 9 engage loosely around the clamping member 7, while the clamping members 10 engage loosely around the clamping member 8 in such a manner as to slidably connect said members .7 and 8 together as stated.

The marking members 5 are respectively provided with angular slits 17 through which the loops 11 and 12 are free to enter the apertures 6 of said marking members as such members are secured in place in a book. The markin members 5 are preferably formed of a cellu oid, a tough qua ity of paper or similar material which is sufiiciently flexible to sidcs of the slits 17 to inserting the loops. For the purpose of shielding the ends of marking members and the retaining loops from contact as the book is handled, 1 preferably provide the

The marking members, 5 serve to indicate the pages of the book, while I have provided the members 20 which are adapted to slide upwardly and downwardly upon the members 5 to indicate the special lines or paragraphs on such pages. The slidable members 20 are preferably provided with index characters arranged numerically in the manner shown which aid the permit the respective user of the book to determine the desired point of opening the same. As a convenient means for fastening the member 20 to the members 5, I have provided the same with two

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,

1. In a book marking device oi the described class, the combination of two overlapping members slidably connected together, means for temporarily connecting; said members with the back of a book, a plul rality of marking members radially connected with said slidable members and adapted to be folded with and between the leaves of a book.

2. In a book marking device of the delapping members slidably connected to-- gether, means for temporarily connecting said members with the back of the book, a loop attached to one of said sliding members, a plurality of longitudinally arranged marking members, and means for slidably connecting said marking members with said loop.

3. In a book marking device of the described class, the combination of two overlapping members slidably connected together, means for temporarily connecting said members with the back of a book, a pluqality of marking members arranged longitudinally of the book, means for temporarily connecting said marking members with said slidablc members, and a transversely arranged marking member slidably supported upon said longitudinal marking member,

In a book marking device of the de scribed class, the combination of two overlapping members slidably connected togcther, means for temporarily connecting said members with the back 01 a book, a plurality of marking members arranged longitudinally oi the book, means for temporarily connecting said marking members with said. over-lapping members, a transversely arranged member slidably supported upon each of said 'marking members, the protruding ends of said slidablc marking members being respeztively provided with index characters.

.5. In a book i'narking device of the described class, the combination of two overlapping members slidably connected together, a retaining hook formed integrally with each of said sliding members adapted to engage the back ofthe cover of a book, circular loops connectedwith the ends of said slidable members, transversely arranged end plates connected with the respective ends of said members adapted to shield said loops from contact, a plurality of longitudinall arran ed markin members rovided with apertures for the reception of said loops and. with transversely arranged slits through said members with the back of a book, a loop connected with the outer end of one of said slidable members, protecting end plates formed integrally with the respective endsof such slidable' members, longitudinally arranged marking members provided'at one end with an aperture for the reception of said loop and with a slit through which said loop may enter and be removed from said aperture and a transverselyarranged marking member slidably supported upon said I longitudinal member, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
