Referring to the drawings, 10, indicates a receptacle for holdingI a quantity of liquid and for l...anypurposes, such as for acids or liquids of a poisonous nature, which is as shown, in the forni of a tube, quite small in circuniference, and made preferably frogn glass` Upon the outer surface of the tube 10, at a point a short distance downwardly from its upper end, is a flangev 12, extending around the tube and forined integral therewith. A. flat inwardly turned portion 141, of the sides of the tube 10, closes the lower end 'f the tube and from the outer surface of said portion. 14, extends a short projection or nozzle 15, ternfinating at a point, through which nozzle extends a small capillary disthrough the end 1d, of the tube and conununicates with the interior of the tube. ln the upper end of the tube 10, which fornzs the receptacle for the liquid is fitted quite snugly a movable diaphragm or stopper 17, coniposed of wood, cork or other material.

Upon the upper end of the Sleeve 18, which is in line horizontally with the upper end of the tube 10, is a circular base plate 19, which extends outwardly a short distance from the line of the outer surfaces of the sleeve, and is formed integral therewith, this plate forming the base plate of a case or chambered member hereinafter described. ln the central portion of the plate 19, is a feed opening 20, of the exact circumference, of the inner circumference of the tube 10, the sides of which openinol 20, extend over the ripper end of the tube 10, and are in a vertical line with the inner vertical surface of said tube. Upon the outer surface of the sleeve 18, is a screw thread 21, extendingl the length of the sleeve and projecting outwardly beyond the line of the flange 12, on tube 10.

The inner portion 24, of the lower end of the collar below the screw threaded portion 23, extends to the flange 12, and a short distance below the said flange and thence is bent at right angles and extending inwardly to the tube l0, forming a flange 25, between which flange and the lower surface of the flange 12, on the tube 10, is a circular recess 26, in which recess is a rubber gasket 27. Upon the outer surface and lower end of collar 22, is an extended milled portion 22X. Upon the upper surface of the base plate 19, is a cylindrical casing Y28, of the saine circumference as said plate, and which extends upwardly a suitable distance to afford the requisite space for a measured downward movement of the planchet cutter hereinafter described. Within the casing 28, which is of the proper thickness, is the chamber 28X, in which the planchets are formed. rlhe casing 28, is secured to the base plate 19, by the screws 29, passing through said latter plate into the casing. Upon the upper end of the casing 28, is an inwardly extended plate 30, forming the top to the chamber 23X, within which plate is a circular opening 31, the circumference of which is approximately the same as that of the tube 10. ligidly connected with the upper surface of the flange 30, and extending around the opening 31, is a collar Vi'vithin the collar 32, and the opening 31, in the top plate 30, is the planchet cutting tubeor die 33, the outer surface and lower end of which. tube or die is inclined downwardly and inwardly at 34, terminating in a sharp edge. Connected rigidly with and extending around the outer surface of the tube 33, at a point immediately above the inclined surface 34, is a flange 35, which flange limits the upward movement of the tube 33. Upon said screw threaded end of the tube 33, is an internally screwthreaded collar 37, upon the upper portion ofY which collar is an inwardly extended plate 38, in which plate is an opening 39, smaller in circumference than the inner circumference of the planchet cutting tube 33. Extending around the tube 33, between the collars 32 and 37, and bearing upon each, is a spiral spring 40, which yields easily to compression, the tendency of which spring is to maintain the cutting end of tube 33,
normally in an upward or retracted position.
l/ithin the tube 33, is a plunger 41, the upper portion of which plunger is reduced in circumference, to form a shoulder 41X, which comes into contact in its normal position with the inner surface of the plate 3S, on the collar 37 the lower end of the plunger in said position being upon a line transversely with the flange 35, on the planchet cutting tube or die 33. The reduced upper end portion 42, of the plunger 41, extends upwardly a suitable distance from the portion within tube 33, and its extreme upper end is screw threaded at 43. Upon said upper end 42, of the plunger is a cap 44, upon which is a downwardly extended, internally screw threaded portion 45, engaging the plunger.
Upon the reduced upper end portion 42, of
the plunger, beneath the nipple 45, is asleeve 46, upon the upper end of which sleeve is an outwardly extended flange 47, which flange fits against the lower end of the nipple 45. The lower end of the sleeve 46, extends downwardly the same distance Vas that between the cutting edge of the inclined lower end of the planchet cutting tube or die, 33,
y and the entrance to the opening 20, in the base plate 19, of the chamber 23X. Extending around the sleeve 46, is a spiral spring- 48, the thickness of the wire and the resistance to compression being greater than that of' the spring 40, the upper end of which spring 43,' bears upon the flange 47, on sleeve 46, and the other end upon the plate 33, on the collar 37, on the planchet cutting tube 33.
In the sides of the casing 23, directly opposite in position are the feed openings 49. These openings extend a short distance upwardly from the base plate 19, and approximately to the distance from the cutting edge trance to the opening 20, in the base plate 19, these openings being in line transversely to the opening 20, and in width corresponding to that oi" the liquid holding tube 10.
5G indicates a strip of material which in width nearly corresponds to the width of the opening 49, in the casing 23, and in thickness is made specifically to afford a thin stopper for a proportionate displacement of liquid in the tube 10, as further described. This strip as seen in Fig. 5, enlarged, may be made from paraffin wax, soap, vegetable liber or analogous substances. 1n the employment and operation of the instrument, the collar 22, on the sleeve 1S, is first removed and the tube 10, readily drawn from the sleeve. The tube 10, is then supplied with theproper liquid until the tube is filled, and the principal stopper 17, is then inserted within the upper open end of the tube 10, as seen in Fig. 3, the stopper completely filling the space above the liquid, and also. with its outer surface upon a line or even with the upper end of the tube.
"l he liquid within the tube without further pressure will remain in a compact body, the atmospheric pressure preventing the liquid from escaping through the capillary orifice 16, in the nozzle 15. The upper, end of the tube is then replaced within the sleeve 18, and the collar turned upon the sleeve, the gasket 26, preventing undue pressure upon the flange 12. One end of the strip 50, is inserted within one of the feed openings 49, in the chambered member 28, and placed over the upper end of the opening 20. Downward pressure is then a plied to the cap 44, on the plunger 41, andp under this pressure the weaker spring 40, upon the plunger yields to the pressure, and the plunger nieves downwardly and the planchet cutting die or tube 33, is also forced downwardly, the cutting edge upon the tube moving downwardly to the upper portion of the sides of the opening 20, in the base plate 19, separating from the strip 50, circular piece or planchet 50X, of same circumference as the opening 20.

The strip 50, is again moved in the opening 49, of chamber 28X, and pressure again applied to the plunger and another p anchet separated from strip 50. in the completion of this latter movement, the lower end of the plunger forces the stopper 17, downwardly within the tube 10, the same distance as that of the thickness of the first planchet, the said planchet being within the upper end of the tube 10, and the second planchet being in a position with its upper surface in line horizontally with the upper surface of the base plate 1Q, and the lower end of the plunger 41, in contact with the upper surface of the said planchet. Under the pressure applied toV move the stopper within the tube, and which now displaces an amount equal to the cubical contents of the planchet, an amount of the liquid equivalent to the amount displaced by the planchet, is discharged through the passage 16, in the capillary tube or nozzle 15. These discharges may be slowly made in drops, according to the pressure applied to the plunger. Upon releasing the pressure upon cap 44, under the expansion of the springs 40 and .48, the plunger and the cutting tube 33,
move upwardly into their normal positions. Upon a requirement for further discharge of the liquid from the tube 10, the strip 50, is moved within the chamber 28X, in the direction of the other opening 49, and another portion of the strip is in position to receive the cutting edge of the tube 33, and the operation repeated. rBhe repeated operation described will advance the stopper 17, toward the end of tube 10, until the said tube is completely filled with the stopper and the planchets, cut from the strip 50, and fed to the tube and the liquid is fully expelled, a new tube being inserted in the sleeve 18, supplied with the liquid and stopper as before.
It is observable that for the purposes of general use, a large number of tubes 10, may be filled with the liquid and used when required, and after use thrown away, the liquid in the meantime being unaffected by exposure to the atmosphere. The precise number of drops required in certain preparations in order to obtain successful results, may be instanced in the use of glacial phosphoric acid in the making of cement for dental uses, and for the administration of powerful medicinal preparations in which theprecise quantity discharged is of great importance, the advantage being that the number of planchets used will indicate the l measured amount of the liquid discharged. It is obvious that the strips from which the planchets are made may be of different thickness, it being the purpose of the invention to so prepare the strip 50, that the planchets separated therefrom will displace a given amount of liquid from the tube.
The invention is applicable to various uses and receptacles of various sizes Afrom which the discharge of a specific amount of liquid is necessary and the invention affords a means for accurately apportioning liquids.
Having fully described my invention, what l now claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A liquid measurer consisting ol' a receptacle or container for liquids having a capillary discharge opening, a stopper movable within the receptacle, and adapted to displace said liquid in small quantities suitable pressure imparting means and superposed planchets co-acting therewith for advancing the stopper a distance determined by the thickness of the respective planchets.
A liquid measurer consisting of a receptacle or container for liquids having a restricted discharge opening and a stopper movable within the receptacle adapted to displace said liquid in small quantities and superposed planchets for advancing the stopper within the tube with means for imparting pressure co-acting with the planchets for advancing the planchets a distance determined by the thickness ol' the respective planchets.
3. A liquid measurer comprising a receptacle or container l'or the liquid having restricted discharge opening for discharging a minute quantity of the liquid, suitable liquid displacing devices and a feeder Vfor feeding said devices to the receptacle.
4. In liquid measurers the combination with a receptacle for the liquid having a small or restricted discharge opening, a movable diaphragm adapted to displace said liquid in small quantities, a chambered member and connecting means connecting said member with said receptacle and self retracting pressure imparting devices movable within said chambered member planchets co-acting with said devices adapted to move said diaphr gni a determinate distance and means Vfor actuating said devices.
5. ln liquid measurers, the combination with a tube for holding the liquid having a capillary4 discharge opening, a chambered member connecting means connecting the chambered member with said tube, a stopper movable within said tube, planohets within said tube imposed upon the stopper and means adapted to be extended within the chambered member for feeding the planchets to the said tube.
6. In liquid measurers the combination with a tube 'for holding the liquid having an opening at its upper end, and a capillary disk charge opening at the lower end,-a chambered member having an opening registering with the opening in the upper end of said tube, connecting means connecting said chambered member with said tube, a strip of suitable material extending within said chambered member separating devices for separating a measured portion of the said strip, and pressure imparting means co-act ing with the separated portion and separating devices forcing said portion of thel strip within the said tube.
7. In liquid measurers the combination with a tube for holding the liquid having an opening at its upper end, and a capillary discharge opening, a cha-mbered member having an opening at the lower end registering with the opening in the upper end of said tube, connecting means connecting said chambered member with said tube, a strip of suitable material and separating devices for separating measured portions thereof extending within the chambered member, and pressure imparting devices co-acting with the separating devices to force the separated portions of the saidv strip within said tube.
8. 1n liquid measurers the combination with a tube for holding the liquid having an opening at its upper end, and a capillary discharge opening at the lower end, a chambered member having an opening registeringr with the opening in the upper end of said tube, connecting means connecting` said chambered member with said tube, said chambered member also having feed openings, a movable die within said chambered member, and a strip of suitable material extending within the chambered member and pressure imparting devices actuating said die, and forcing the portions of said strip separated by the die within said tube.
9. 1n liquid measurers the combination with a tube havin@ an opening at its upper end, and a capillary discharge opening at the lower end a chambered member, having an opening registering with the opening in the upper end of said tube, connecting means connecting said chambered member with said tube, said chambered member having feed openings, a strip of suitable material extending within said chambered member planchet cutting devices adapted to separate the planchets from. said strip and pressure imparting devices, co-acting therewith to force the planchets within said tube, and means for retarding the movement of the pressure imparting devices.
10. 1n liquid measures the combination with a tube for holding the liquid having an opening at its upper end, and a capillary discharge opening, a clianibered `member having feed openings and an opening at the lower end registering with the opening in the upper end of said tube, means connecting said chambered member with. said tube, a strip of suitable material extending within said chanib'ered rr uber through said feed openings, a planchet cutting tube adapted to separate the planchets from said strip Within said chambered member, a collar on said tube, and a plunger having a cap coacting therewith and movable within said cutting tube and acting to force the planchets within the tube, for holding the liquid and variable pressure controlling springs upon said plunger and between the cap thereon. and the collar on said cutting tube and between said collar and the chambered member adapted to permit the prior action of the cutting tube.
11. 1n liquid measurers the combination with a tube for holding the liquid having an opening at its upper end, and a flange upon its outer surface and a capillary discharge opening, of a sleeve having an outer screw threaded portion, a base plate connected with said sleeve having anopening corresponding in size to and registering with the opening in the upper end of said tube, a casing connected with the base late, a stopper movable within said tube a ternate pressure imparting and recoiling planchet cutting devices connected with said casing, and an internally screw threaded collar upon said sleeve and a flange in said collar supporting the flange on said tube.
12. 1n liquid measurers, the combination with a tube having an opening in its ulpper end and an external flange, and a capi lary discharge opening at its lower end, of an externally threaded sleeve upon said tube, an internally screw threaded collar upon said sleeve, having an inwardly extended fiange and a recess and a gasket in said recess beneath the flange on said tube, a base plate connected. with said sleeve having a feed opening corresponding in size to and registering with the opening in upper portion of said tube, and a casing connected with the base plate having an opening in the top thereof, a tube within said opening having a cutting edge, a plunger within said tube, having a reduced upper portion andA a shoulder, a collar upon said tube having a flange extending over said shoulder, a cap on said plunger, a sleeve upon said plunger beneath said cap, and extending downwardly a predetermined distance, a spiral spring upon the sleeve upon said plungerbearing upon said cap and the said ilanged collar on said cutting tube, and a separate spiral spring bearing upon said flanged collar and the casing.
13. 1n liquid nieasurers, the combination with a tube having an opening in its upper end and an external flange and a capillary discharge opening at its lower end, of an externally screw threaded sleeve uponV said tube, an internally screw threaded collar upon said sleeve, having ailange and a recess, a gasket within said recess, a base plate connected with the said sleeve, having an openin ol` the approximate size to that ol' said tu e and registering with the opening in said tube in the upper portion thereof, a casing connected with the said base plate having an opening in the top and feed openings in the side thereof, a tube within said opening in the top of said casing having a cutting edge upon its lower portion, a plunger within said tube having a portion reduced in circumference and a shoulder, a collar upon said cutting tube having a flange bearing on the shoulder on said plunger and a spiral spring upon said plunger between said collar on said cutting tube and the top of said casing, a cap upon said plunger, a sleeve upon the reduced portion of said plunger extending downwardly a predetermined distance and a spiral spring bearing upon said cap and the ilange in the collar on said cutting tube.
