To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN PHELAN, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny, tate of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Devices for Securing Railway-Rails to Metallic Ties, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which Figure I is a side elevation of a metallio tie showing my improvement applied thereto Fig. 2 is an end elevation partly in section; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the securing clip 4 is a vertical sectional view showing the angularly disposed holes in the top flange of the tie.
lay invention relates to deviiies for securing railway rails to metallic ties, and I have shown it applied to a metallic tie of the ordinary I-beam construetion, although it may be applied in a like manner to other metallic ties and it consists of a securing elip having depending parallel shanks adapted to be driven through angularly disposed openings in the upper face of the tie, whereby said shanks are caused to be spread apart, forming an elfective olench, and a perfectly tight and secure fastening for the rail is formed.
In the drawing A represents a metallic tie of the ordinary Iii-beam type, having a top flange 2, a bottom flange 3, and a connecting web Formed in the flange 2, at suitable points at eaeh side of the base of the rail are the diverging or oppositely inclined openings 5.
The securing device B, which may be made of any suitable metal such as steel or wrought iron, consists of a head 6 havinga laterally projecting lip 6, and two depending parallel shanks 7 and 7. VJhen in use, the shanks 7 and 7 are driven through the angularly disposed openings 5, which causes the shanks to diverge or separate until the lip 6 engages the base flange of the rail. Thus the securing device is automatically locked by the more driving of the securing device downward and a firm and rigid cleneh is formed between the rail and tire tic.
The angularly disposed apertures 5 serve an important function, as they cause the shanks 7 and 7 to be spread apart, whereby oonsiderable resistance and holding power is attained, and the securing device is not liable to become loose or work out under the vibration of the rails caused by the passing train.
Although I have shown one form of securing clip, I do not desire to limit myself thereto, as various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, nor do I desire to limit myself to the use of one oli on each side of the rail as the number may be inoroased if desired. where space permits.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a metallic railwa tie having oppositely inclined openings in the top wall thereof, of a seeuring (lOVl-LO having a laterally projecting lip adapted to engage the base flange of a railway rail, and depending shanks adapted, when driven through the openings in the tie, to separate or diverge; substantially as shown and des-tzribed.
2. The combination with a metallic railway tie having diverging or oppositely inclined openings formed in the top wall thereof, of a scouring device having an overhanging lip portion adapted to engage with the base flange of a railway rail, and depend ing shanks adapted to spread when driven through the said openings in the tie; suh
