Description

@stent @lattina DIToN sNEDEKEaoF LOCKPQRT, NEWrYoRK.
Lette/rs Patent No. 92,116, dated Juize 29, 1869.
11i/:MOVEMENT 1N commun lemana' AND cAPsTAN.
The Schedule :referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom fit may' concern:
Be itknown that I, DITON SNEDEKER, of Lockport, in the county of Niagara, and vState of New York, have invented a new and Combined Boat-Cleat and Capstan;v and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exactdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- 'Figure I is 'a longitudinal vertical section, and
Figure II, a plan thereof.
The nature of my invention consists- First, making a frame to containthe windlasseme'chanisni, with its top bar projecting beyond the ends, so as to give thefraine the contour, and enable it to perform the functions o f a'cleat.
Second, iu the peculiar man'ner of constructing and arranging the windlass and its upper bearing with the cleat, so that the .windlass may be readily removed from one cleat, and placed in another, at another4 part of the boat, thus requiring but one windlass, and making it available with every cleat upon the boat.
ALike letters refer to like parts in each -of the gures.
A represents a boat-cleat, made of cast-'iron or any other suitable mateiiahbeing formed very much like those in common use uponcanal and other boats, but having an opening transversely throughit, within which is-contaiued the windlass B, supported upon and operated through the shaft C, having a bearing at itslower end inthe vf rameor cleat A.
This shaft is' made square where it passes through the windlass, to preventthe windlass from turning thereupon, andlhas a square headrc, for the' reception of a hand-lever, D, through which the powermay be l applied when no very great resistance is'. to be over- GOlIi 8.
For tbe purpose of rendering this shaft readily .re-
movable from the upper portion 'of the frame A, I make the hole' m therein, of suicient size to allow the 4square portion'of the shaft to pass', readily through,
and then reduce the sizeof the .hole by a ring, d,
which fits on the upper end of the shaft and within the opening inthe frame, the said ring forming the upper bearing for the shaft To coniinethe bearing d in its place, I make use of 5 in one side. When it is desired to introdnce'the shaft,
the bearing d is turned so 'as to coincide withthe pro- 4 jection e, when f it may be dropped into place, 'and turned into the position shown inthe drawings, the
` projection holding it in place.
The lower part of the windlass is enlarged, and forms a spur-wheel, b, meshing with a pinion, f, and sup'-A ported upon the shaft F, which is square 'where it passes through the pinion f, and has bearings in the cleat or frame, and a 'square head for thelever D,
movable from the frame. Y
When the resistance .tovbe overcomel is considerable, the power is applied tothe square head of this shaft.
A pawl,A g, i`s attached to the lower part of the frame, and held in place by a spring, g', which engages similar to those of the shaft C, and being, like it, re
-with the teeth of the spur-wheel b, andfprevents the windlass from being zturned backwards.
The cleat is attached vto the deck of. the boat by bolts i" h h, or in any other suitable-manner.
Myv invention is adapted more especially for use on Vcanal-boats, but-may be used upon any vessel vwhere .a windlassis required.
' It will be found of great use in getting heavilyloaded boats off ground, and in drawing them into locks, moving boats in harbors or in basins, unloading heavy` articlgs, and, in short, for any purpose where a: I windlass or oapstan can he made useful. The windlass being removable, only one is' required to rende-r every cleat in the boat `available as a capstan, thus 'rendering it a very inexpensive 'as welli as useful apparatus.
, \Having thus described' my invention, l
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-` ent, is-
.1. Arranging the windlalss-mechanism withinthe,
frame A, the .top y plate of -u'hicliprojectsbeyond thev ends, so that the frame,'as a whole, has the form and performs the functions of a cleat, as herein shown andl described.
2V. The'construction xand arrangement, with a boatelcat, of the ring-bearing d, recessv or liole m, the shaft C, and windlass- B, for rendering the latter readily re.
movable, as and'for the purpose set forth."
v D. SNEDEKER.
