Description
UNITED STAT PATENT ()FFICE,
WILLIAM H. ESOHBACH, 0F WABASH, INDlANA.
DETACHABLE HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1909.
Application filed October 27, 1908. Serial No. 459,772.
To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 1 ILLIAM. H. Escu- BAcu, a citizen of tho hnitod Stetos, rcsid- I ing at Vi'ubash, in the county of \fabnsh and State of Indiana, have invontod certain new and useful Improvoinents in Detachable Hinges; and '1 do declare the following; to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apportnins to make and use the some, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to tho figures of roioronce nun-lied thereon, which 3 form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to detachable hinges,
and has for its object to provide a device of this class which is pnrticulartr simple in its construction, easy and cheap to manufacture, and employing tt minimum amount of material.
.A further object of my invention is to proi vide a detachablo hinge, the leaves of which are stamped out of shoot metal requiring no casting.
A further object oi my invention is to provide a detachable hinge stznnpod out of sheet metal-and so constructed as to pi rule an extremoly long and durable bonl'ing.
Vith those objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction of one loai of tho. hinge and tho stntionai v bracket to which the hinge loaf cooperates.
Referring to tho accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of tho dotzu-lnible hinge constructed in uzcordnnco with my invention. ..l*i, 2 is an elevation 01, the brnchot. Fig. 3 is :1 vertical sectional view through the hinge and bracket tnlion on lino 3r--ii ol Fig, 1. Fig. =1 is a trnnsvorso soctionnl viow taken on lino 4 t of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is an edge view ol' the hinge.
liilio munorals of reference indicat the same parts throughout tho scrcral igurcs.
in which:
1 indicates ho lungo wluch comprises tho loaros :2 and Ii. 'lho lcat 3'may bo o1 any design but prol'orably as shownin Fig. .l, and
is stamped out of shoot metal boin'g'providod with suitable perforations to rccoivo screws 4'. The loaf 2, as shown m Fig.1. l, is provided. with a tongue or extension o, which tongue or extension extends lrom the point (i which is on a line with the bottom edge 7 of the leaf 3 and mssos parallel with tho nxis ofthe hinge to the point 8.
9 indicates tho bracket which is stamped low tho hinge proper; this constriurtion all l l l l 1 out of sheet metal and provided with suitable perforations 10 to receive screws for fastening the same rigidly in position, said braclmt 51 being provided with a slot 1], each edge of said slot being provided with a I retaining l'lnngo 12, said retaining flanges 12 being formed to receive the tongue or extension 5 of tho hinge loaf"! as clearly shown in Fig. 1. i
As will appear from Fig. 1 tho extension. or
1 tongue 5 is somewhat longer than the slot 11 so that when said tongue or extension 5 is in position within tho retaining flanges 12 the l extreme lower end 13 of said tongue or extenl sion extends below the extreme lower end 14- of the slot 11 c.1igro1'iiig the llnt surface 15 of ii the supporting braclwt- 9. l
Referring; again to Fig. 1 it will be seen that shoulders 16 and 17 are formed on the i hinge loaf 2 on each side of the tongue or extension, 5, said shoulders 16 and 17 engaging l the uppor ends 18 of the retaining; flan; s 12 l as clcitrlyshown in Fig. 1, thus limiting the l entrance of the extension or tongue 5 within l the rotnining flanges 1'2 and forming a strong l rigid and durable stop.
As will appear from the drawing, the ex.- I tension or tongue 5 within the retaining flanges 12 of the supporting bracket .1 are belowing the device to be no wider than on ordiner hinge, while at the same time it allows on oxccptionally long rigid bearing for the device, greatly strengthening and incroz-ising the life ol tho same. .By reason of this construction it is also apparent that the entire dovice can be stamped out of sheet 'mctnl, thus rcducing: the cost of production l and obviating tho nocossitv of costing. l llavin; thus fully doscribod my invention what 1, claim us new and desire to secure by liottors lntent of the United States is:
1..'\ detachable; hinge comprising two hinge leaves and a sin iporting brachot, one of snid hinge loavos being provided with a. l tongue or extension former below the lower cdgo of the hinge loaves and extending 1 downwardly in u linoparnllol with the axis of the hinge, said supporting bracket being prol vidcd with :1, vertical slot and a rota-nuns l llonn'e on ouch side 01'' said slot to rcceive the i said tongue or extension, the said tongue or extension being longer then the snid rot-ainl inc, flanges and slot in such manner that the i end of said tongue or extension engages the ilnt surface of the rotnining bracket, sheulg i 920m e.
ders formed on each side of said tongue or l taining flanges to receive the said tongue or extension to engage the upper ends of the said extensioh on one of the hinge loaves, said retaining flanges to limit the entrance of the tongue or extension and the said retaining saidton no or extension within the said reflanges being below the lower edge of thehinge 5 taininfi anges. a 1 leaves proper.
2. v detachable hinge comprising two In testimony whereof-I am my signature, hinge leaf sections, a tongue or extension in presence of two witnesses.
formed on one of said leaves and extending WILLIAM H. ESCHBACH. downwardly therefrom in a line parallel with Witnesses: 10 the axis of the hinge and supporting bracket, J AS. H. STIGGLEMAN,
said supporting bracket comprising two re 1 L. W. JORDAN,
