Description

attain,
1HE Nvmus PETER: cal, WASHINGTON. D. c. f
ABRAHAM neLv, or GENEVA, INDIANA.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May l 1, 1909.
I i Application led January 19, 1909. Serial No. 473,053.
To all Vwhom it 'may concern:
Be it known that l, ABRAHAM EGLY, citizen of the United States, residing at Geneva, in the `county of Adams and State of Indiana, have invented certain'new and useful lmprovements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fence posts, more particularly to a corner post especially adapted for a iiood fence of Wire used along the banks of a river or stream.
The object ofthe invention is to provide a simple and'practical post of this character which will be strong, durable and compaiatively inexpensive, and which may be readily folded over to a horizontal position so as to lie flat upon the ground when the banks of the river or stream, along which the fence eX- tends, are overflowed, the folding of the post and fence permitting ice, logs and other trash to float over the fence Without injuryto the same. y
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of thenovel features o'f construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully` described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevationy of the improved foldable post for a flood fence; Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of the other side of the post; Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line 3-3 in Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on line 4-4 in Fig. 1. v
In the drawings 1 denotes the body of the post and 2 a diagonal brace for the same. These rts e eferablv made of l o and `r1g1d nnec e to ac 1 ot er metal straps 3 arranged upon their opposite sides,l
one end of the brace being set in a recess in the post as shown. The post and brace are also united by a longitudinally extending and horizontally disposed tie-rod 4 which passes through said parts'and has an adjusting nut 5 upon one of its ends. Y y v,
The lower ends of the post and brace are pivotally mounted so that they can be folded over to a horizontal position as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3. This mounting of the brace is referably effected by securing to its angular ower end anangle metal plate Vor casting 6 from the vertical iiange olwhich dependstwo integral lugs 7 formed intheir bottom edges with U-shaped notches 12. The latter are adapted to receive the upper or cross portions of U-shaped'brackets 13, the

vmg 16.
depending arms or ends of which are embedded in a cement block 14 or any other The construction just decribed enables either one of the brackets 13 to serve as a pivot or fulcrum for the brace while the casting 6 may readilyswing into or out of engagement with the other of said brackets 13.
vThe hinge or pivotal `mounting for the post body is eilected by bolting as at l5 or otherwise securing to one side of the lower portion of the same a channeled plate or castrEhe latter is formed with two bearing ears 17 to receive a horizontal pivot rod or bolt 13 extendmg through the eyes19 of two eye bolts 20. Ilhe lower ends of these bolts or brackets 2O are embedded in a cement block or similar anchoring body 21 as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. Upon the side of the post, opposite that on which the channeled or flanged plate 16 is located, is secured by one of the bolts 15, a right angular bracket or strap 22. rl`he horizontal arm 23 of this strap 22 is formed with an openingLto receive the screw threadedupper end of a pivotally mounted eye bolt 24. The eye of the bolt 24 rotates upon a U-shaped bracket 25 having the ends of its arms embedded in the block 21. Upon the bolt 24 above and below the arm 23 of the angle strap or plate 22 are adjusting and retaining nuts 26 by means of which the post may be maintained in a perpendicular position. When the upper nut 26 is removed from its bolt, the post and its vbrace may be swung over flat upon the ground or to a horizontal position, as indicated inA dotted lines in Fig. 3. The post lswings in the direction of the side on which the plate 16 is located, but said plate may be placed on the other side of the post, thereby permitting the latter to be mounted for vswinging movement in either direction Without'the necessity of having different fittings.'
y vMy improved post is especially adapted Vfor the corner or end of a iiood fence but it may" be used at other points in the fence.
Thefence (not illustrated) may be of Wire orof any other form, material and construction. i
The blocks or bases l1,4 and` 21, which are preferably made of cement, may be pieces of natural stone or anchoring bodies of any other description. They may be of any size and shape and embedded in the ground to any depth'according to its character.
From the foregoing it Will be seen that the invention provides an exceedingly simple and practical fence post for a ilood fence lo cated along the banks of a stream or river which overfloods its banks. The pivotal mounting oi' the post and fence enables them to be dropped to a horizontal position flat upon the ground during lood times so that ice, logs and trash will l'loat over them Without injuring them, or piling up against them.
Various changes in the forni, proportion and minor details ol construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, whatI g l claim is:
1. The combination of a base, a foldable pest arranged above and spaced from the base, pivot supporting eyes upon the base, a pivot in said eyes, a hinge plate secured to l one side of the post and rotatable upon said l 1 l l pivot, an angle bracket secured to the other side of the post and having an apertured end, a bolt pivoted to the base and projecting upwardly through the aperture in the end of said bracket, and nuts upon the;
threaded portion of the bolt above and below said apertured end of the bracket whereby the post may be adjusted and maintained in a perpendicular position.
2. The combination of the base, a foldable post arranged above and spaced from the base, pivot supporting eyes upon the base, a pivot in said eyes, a hinge plate secured to one side of the post and rotatable upon said pivot, an angle bracket secured to the other side of the post and having an apertured end, a bolt pivoted to the base and projecting upwardly through the aperture in the end ol said bracket, and nuts upon the threaded portion of the bolt above and below the apertured end of the bracket, and a diagonal brace. Vr'ixed to one side of the post and projecting` downwardly therefrom, the lower end of the brace being hingedly mounted'whereby it may fold with the post.
ln testimonywhereof l. allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
