llc it known that i, @iraniens Brr-nonnen, a citizen ol the `United States, residing at lochester, in the county of Monroe and State of low orl, have invented a new and usel'ul improvement in Lanterns, of Which the following is a specification.
rhis invention relates to that class of lanterns in `which the oil pot is removably arranged `within the body no op or globe ring, as, lor instance, in railroad lanterns in which the body hoop or globe ring, which is secured to or supported by the upright members of the guard, supports the globe Which is inserted into the basket-shaped guard from above and rests Vupon the upper edge of the body hoop or globe ring.
The objects of this invention are to produce a lantern or" this character in which the oil pot is securely held in position by simple,
compact and convenient devices, which permits the ready removal of dirt from the body hoop or globe ring, and in Which the Wick. raiser shalt extends outside of the body hoop and can be manipulated Without requiring the removal ol the oil pot from the body hoop.

2O represents the body hoop or globe ring, 2l the upright guard members secured thereto, 22, 23, 2l, 25 the horizontal guard rings, 26 the top hinged to the uppermost guard ring 22, and 27 the globe which rests on the upper edge of the body hoop or globe ring by its bottoni shoulder 28 and is held down upon the body hoop by the top in the usual way. The iiody hoop or globe ring is provided at its lower end with 'an inwardly projecting annular bottom or ilange 29 which surrounds a central opening 3U.
El represents the oil pot which rests loosely on this ottom and is centered on the same by any suitable means, for instance, at the top by projections 32 on the inner side oi the body hoop, which projections may be formed, as shown, by the bent portions of the upright guard members, and at the bottoni by the annular depression or shoulder in the annular bottoni iiange.
34 represents the burner which is secured to the oil pot by any suitable means, and 35 represents arms which extend sidewise from the burner and receive the lower edge 36 ot the globe. When the latter rests upon the body hoop it bears also upon the arms 35 of the burner and clamps the oil pot down upon the annular supporting llange 29 of the body hoop, thereby holding the oil pot 'lirmly in position Within the body hoop Without the employment of special fastening devices for that purpose. The clam ing arms are preferably made ilexible or e astic to better adjust themselves to the bottom of the globe. l
'Upon releasing the top 26 and removing the globe the oil pot is released and can be lifted out of the body hoop. The latter is provided in its upper edge with a notch S7' for the wich raiser shaft 38 which has its manipulating disk 39 arranged outside oi the body hoop, Where it can be turned for adjusting the Wick When the globe is in place Without disturbing the oil pot, thereby avoiding the inconveniences Which attend the removal of the oil pot for that purpose in most railroad lanterns. The removal of the oil pot from the body hoop uncovers the opening 30 in the annular bottom 29. Any dirt Which may have lodged in the body hoop can be readily removed through this opemng.
l claim as my invention:
l. In a lantern, the combination of a body hoop having a bottom permanently secured thereto, an oil pot resting loosely on said bottom and provided near its top with a laterally projecting holding device, a globe resting above its lower end directly upon the body hoop and bearing With its lower end upon said holding device, and a movable top for holding the globe removably upon the body hoop and holding device, substantially as set forth.
2. ln a lantern, the combination of a Ibody hoop having a bottom permanently secured thereto and provided with an opening Which is surrounded by said bottom, an oil pot resting loosely on said bottom over said opening and provided near its top With a laterally projecting holding device, a globe resting above its loWer end directly upon the body hoop and bearing with its lower end upon said holding device, and a movable top for holding the globe removably upon the body hoop and holding device, ,substantially as set forth.
3. In a lantern, the combination of a body hoop having a bottom secured thereto and rovided in its up er edge with a notch, an o1 pot resting ,loosely on said bottom ,and provided with a Wick-raiser shaft which eX- tends outwardly through said notch, a laterally projecting holding device carried by said oil pot near the top thereof, a globe resting above its lower end directly upon the body hoop and bearing with its lower end upon said holding device, and a movable top for holding the globe removably upon the body hoop and holding device, substantially as set forth.
4. In a lantern, the combination with an oil pot, of a body hoop having a bottom secured thereto and provided with a central depression for supportin and centering the oil pot, the oil pot resting loosely on said bottom Within said depression, a laterally projecting holding device on said oil pot, a
f globe resting directly on said body hoop and bearing upon said holding device, and means for holding the globe in place., substantially as set forth.
5. In a lantern, the combination with an oil pot, of la body hoo permanently attached t ereto and adapted to receive the oil pot from above, the oil pot resting loosely on said bottom and being provided with a laterally projecting holding device, a globe resting directly upon said body hoop and bearing upon said holding device for holding the oil pot on said bottom, and a movable top bearing upon the globe, substantially as set forth.
6. 1n a lantern, the combination with an oil pot, of a body hoop having a bottom permanently attached thereto and adapted to receive the oii pot from above, the oil pot resting loosely on said bottom and vbeing pro vided with laterally projecting flexible holding arms, a globe resting directly upon said body hoop and bearing upon said holding arms for holding the oil pot on said bottom, and a movable top bearing upon the globe, substantially as set forth.
