Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Pnns'roN KYLE and CHARLES LONG, citizens of the United States, residing at Coal Blufl, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Switch and Signal; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in manually operated railroad switches and signals and comprises the construction of a railroad switch and signal provided with a vertically operated lever.
One of the objects of the invention is the construction of a simple switch mechanism comprising a stand, a signal operatively mounted on the stand and a lever mechanism arranged to be vertically operated and simultaneously throw a switch and operate the signal.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure l is a side elevation of our improved switch showing the operatin lever in its normal position; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the operating lever depressed; Fig. 3 is an end elevation; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section.
In the drawings, numerals 1 and 2 designate main rails and 3 and 4 designate switch rails. The main rail 2 and the switch rail 2 are connected by a slidable bar 5 which is slidable between guide pieces 6 and 7. The slidable bar 5 is formed with an end slot 8 and is connected with a link 9. The link 9 is slightly curved upwardly at one of its ends and is slotted at its curved end to receive a crank lever 10. The lever 10 is pivotally mounted upon a stand 11 provided with an off-set 12 and connects at its upper end with a link 13, which link is pivotally connected at its upper end with a lever 14 which is pivotally mounted on the stand 11 by means of an upper off-set 15. The lever 14 is formed with a body slot 16 through which a rack 17 extends, said lever being provided with a suitable clutch 18 for engaging with said rack.
A signal carrying bar 19 is movably mounted on the stand 11 by means of apertured lugs 20 and 21 formed on said stand and said bar carries a suitable signal 22 on its upper end. The signal carrying bar 19 is formed with a lateral lug 28 which is connected with a link 24 having connections with the switch operating link 9.
Should it be desired, the clutch 18 may be dispensed with and the rack 17 provided with apertures and a pin arranged to extend through the apertures for locking the lever 14 on said rack so as to hold the switch in a closed or open position. When it is desired to throw a switch, the lever 14 is depressed. This operation will raise the link 13 and simultaneously bring rail 3 into engagement with rail 1 and operate the signal carrying bar 19.
Our improved switch and signal mechanism provides simple means i'or operating a switch and securing the same in a fixed position by the application of vertically applied pressure.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details can be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this inven tion as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described and ascertained the nature of our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. In combination with switch rails, a bar for moving a part of the rails, a link connected to the bar, a crank lever for operating the link, a link for operating the crank lover, a lever for operating the link last mentioned, a stand pivotally supporting the operating means, a rack arranged to extend through the lever and supported on the stand, a vertical signal carrying bar operatively supported 011 the stand, and a link having connec tions with the operating link for operating the signal carrying bar.
2. The combination with switch rails, of a stand formed with an oil-set, a lever pivotally supported on the oil-set and the stand, a link connected to the lever, a second lever connected to the link, a link having connections with a part of the switch rails connected to the second lever, a signal carrying bar operatively supported on the stand, and a link i the signal carrying rod for turning the latter 15 connected to the signal carrying bar con- 5 when the operating lever is depressed to throw the switch.
