B. BOESW-INKLB. FOLDING TABLE.
APPLICATION nun 16,8, 1908.

WVW
BENARD BOESWINKLE, OFGRAND RAPlDS, MICHIGAN FOLDING" so. aaopoa Specification of Letters Patent.
Tax-311E.
Patented may *1, 1369.
Application filed August 8, 1908.' Serial No. 547,585.
To allwhmn it ma/ylconcem: Be it known that l, BENARD Bonswmxnn, a citizen of the United States of America, rc- Siding at Grand Ra ids, in the county ofi Kent and State. of it ichigan, have invented i certain new and useful Improvements in 1 Folding Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same. My invention relates to improvements in foldin tables and its object, is to provide improve 4 means for pivoting the logs; to provide improvcdbracing mechanism for the same; to provide improvedframing for the top, and to provide the device with various new 'and useful 4 features hereinafter more full described and particularly pointed out in t e claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in whicl'i: Figure 1 is a perspective of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 an inverted lan view of the same with the legs folded; ig. 3 a vertical sectionbf'tlle device taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 with the lcgsopened out for use; Fig. fl an enlarged detail in horizontal section of the pivot mechanism of one of the legs; and, Fig. 5 an enlarged detail of one corner of the frame. I Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures. 1 represents a flat thin top to the table, preferabl' of laminated veneer or narrow matched boards. 2 a framesurrounding the top and projecting downward therefrom, and
' also securely'attached thereto. 3 are legs-pivoted under the respective corners of the table.
4 are brace rods each ivoted at one end to the respective leg and aving an outwardly projectlngoppos ite' end traversing a groove 14 in the inner surface of theframe. At one end of this groove is a recess 15 to receive and hold the outwardly turned end of the brace rod, when the leg is turned to vertical position, and the brace is preferably inclined outwardly fron'rthe leg, wherebyit sprlngs 1n- Ward and is retained by its resiliency within 80 "the recess 15, when the-legs are turned verti-' cal 'andjs partiallyrelieved from tension when the legs are folded. At each corner,
:the' frame 2- ls'oined by a miter joint 6 havin its'middle portion a tenon 5 through D ch extends a screw or other fastening 7,
' thus forming a very substantial corner joint.
'usually ivoted are liab To space each leg a art from the inner surfare of the frame to M 'ord room for the brace 4, tlierehetwcen, corner blocks 5:- are inserted within the frame and attached thereto.
The top is strengthened and sup ortod by curved strips fl which extend at t icir outer ends parallel witlr the blocks 8, and between .which blocks and strips the respective legs are inserted and pivotaily secured by screws 11, extending through the strips, legs, and block and into the frame. T he serewsarefnrthcr supported by screw eyes 12, surrounding the heads thereof. and washers 13 are insorted between the screw cyes'and' strips 9. The strips 9 are each curved toward the center of the table and secured to the respective sides of a small square block 10 attached to the under ,side of the table: at the center thereof. These strips 9 are also secured to the table top,and thus serve to support and strengthen the same, and at the same time at their outer ends form embracing members for the legs and su ports for the pivot screws 11. I am thus a.le to provide a very strong and reliable fastening for the ivoted legs which as lie to become detached or out 0 order on account of the weakness of the pivotmechanisml It will also be noted that the downwardly projecting frame surrounds the legs, stri s 9, and block 10,which are all within the ane of the frame when folded, thus provi ing a very com act and symmetrical structure; also that t e brace rods are simple, strong, and automatic in operation. i
What I claim is 1. .A table comprisin a top, a frame attachedto the margins o the top and projecting'downward therefrom, curved strips attached to the top and within the frame each strip having its outer end parallel with the" frame and spaced apart therefrom and havin its inner end extended toward the center-0 the top, legs pivoted between the outer ends of the strips and the frame, and braces adjustably connecting the respective legs with the frame.
2. A table comprising a top, a frame'at. tachcd to the top and extending downward therefrom, curved stri s having their outer ends near the corners of the frame and spaced apart therefrom, corner blocks in the respectiyc corners of the frame and opposite the.
ends of the strips, a rectangular block tachcd to the center of the top said strips ing curved inward at their inner ends and at attached thereto, aleg pivoted between the the frame.
of the frame, a curved strip having one end tached to the respective sides of the blot-h, legs pivoted between the outer ends of the strips and the corner blocks, and braces ad" justab'ly connecting the respective legs with the frame. 7 v 3. A table comprising a top, a square block 1 hed to the center of the top, a frame atcached to the margin of the top, curved 5 strips attached at their inner ends to thej block and having their outer ends abutting against the frame and laterally spaced apart therefrom, legs pivoted between the outer ends of the strips and the Frame, and braces adjustably connecting the respective legs and 4. A table, comprising a top, a frame attacheo. to the top and pro eeting downward therefrom, a block inserted within the corner parallel with the block and spaced apart therefrom and the other end extending in- Ward toward the center'of the table top and block and strip, a pivot screw extending throu h the strip, theleg, and the block, and into 1; e frame, a screweye supporting the 5. A folding table, comprising a top, a
- frame attached to the top and extending downward therefrom, a block in each corner of the frame, curved strips each extending from a position opposite one of the blocks and spaced apart therefrom to near the center 01" the table to and on the under side of the same, a center block attached to the table top to which block the stri s are attached said strips also being attached to the top, le 8 pivoted between the respective blocks and the outer ends of the strips, pivot screws extending th ough the strips, and the legs, and the blocks, and into the trame, screw-eyes engaging the headsof the screws and inserted in the frame, and braces adjustably connecting the legs with the frame.
In testimony whereof 1 afiix my signature in presence of twowinesses. j
