discharges into the bowl by the construction To all whom "it may concern:
' it contributes materially to Be it known that I, MARY E. S'ronns, a 111st described, citizen of the United States, residing at the comfort of the patient who may be neces- Henning, in the county of Ottertail, State 2 sitated to use the pan. I provide the sides of Minnesota, have invented certain new and of the bowl, 11 with knobs, 15, that afford useful Improvements in Bed-Pans; and I the usual cushion (not means for attachlng do hereby declare the following to a full, shown) on the neck of the bowl to contrlbute clear, and exact description of the invention,
further to the comfort of the patient. The such as wlll enable others skilled in the art said knobs also assist in carrying the pan to which 1t appertalns to make and use the same.
about from place to place.
This invention has for its object the pro- T he hollow spout or horn, 12, is provided with a stopple, the body, 16, of which fits in vision of improvements in bed pans, whereby they may be rendered more serviceable, l
the hole in the spout and the laterally proin points of securing a rightful and comjecting flange, 17, rests upon the top, preventing the escape of odor from the spout fortable position of the patients body on the and obviating liability of accidentally spillpan so that, the same time, all discharges ing the contents of the bowl through the said may be made into the latter without danger spout. of any portion running or dripping on the i The form and features of my improved bed-pan, shown and described, are of particular importance in the accomplishment of the specific functions; it is to be particularly noted that the highest points of the back and sides of the bowl slope in a substantially straight line from the back to the nose as is indicated in Fig. 2.
It is designed that the rear portion of the pan shall not be as high or wide as those commonly in use, and that the nose and entire part of the body shall be hollow, so as to completely hold any and all discharges of a patient at one use.
The cover to the opening and spout are important in a sanitary point of View as is obvious.
lVhat is claimed is- A bed pan having a receiving opening in its top, the top rising with a convex upper face in all directions from said opening and. touching a common plane that is inclined forwardly and downwardly, excepting that portion between the opening and the front of the pan which portion rises to a height below said inclined plane, the convexity of this lower portion being continued in a downward direction to the bottom of the pan, said top at all points being of sufficient width to form a rest for the user of the pan.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.

nose and over the sides.
The invention may be embodied in the device portrayed in the annexed drawings, forming a part of this specification, in view of which drawings, the improvements will first be described with respect to their construction and mode of operation, and then be pointed out in the subj oined claim.
Of the said drawings-Figure 1 is a plan of the improved bed-pan, with the cover in place over the opening. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the center of the bowl. Fig. t is a transverse section in a place nearer the nose than that of Fig. 3.
Similar numerals of reference designate similar parts or features, as the case may be, wherever they occur.
In the construction of the neck, 10, instead of making it wedge-shaped and with a flat top, as has generally been done, I make the top surface, 13, of the hollow neck of concave form, in cross section from the point of the nose to the opening in the top of the bowl so that the body of the patient resting on the hollow or concaved top will insure all discharges being made into the bowl; and in furtherance of this end, the rear portion, 14, of the bowl is made quite high and round on top and is turned downward in rounded form to the edge of the opening to the bowl, which latter is provided with a cover, 5, having a lateral annular flange, 6, and a vertical annular flange, 7, all formed to fit the margin and edge of the opening.
In addition to the security of effecting all Vitnesses J. C. HARRIS, R. H. PATTERSON.
