WATER-TUBE BOILER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. Hoorun, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVater-Tube Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to water-tube boilers and has for its objects the improvements in the construction of the headers, and in the connection of the headers with the steamdrum by means of a corrugated tube, whereby the excess expansion of the tubes over that of the steam-drum is provided for and the injurious effects thereof, so usual in Water-tube boilers of this type, are entirely overcome.
The features of my invention are hereinafter fully set forth and described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a water-tube boiler with parts broken away, embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is an end view in elevation of a half section of the same. Fig. 3 is a top or plan view of one of my improved boiler-headers. Fig. 4 is a side view in elevation of a portion of one of the two half header-sections. Fig. 5 shows a plate cut into shape to be formed up into a one half section of my improved boiler-header.
In the drawings A is the steam-drum and B the Water-tubes of an ordinary water-tube boiler.
In the construction of the headers C and C of my improved boiler, I take a plate D of metal and cut it into the shape substantially as shown in Fig. 5. It is then formed up substantially into the sha e shown in Fig. 4, by turning the edges D t iereof inward substantially on the broken lines d and (1, so as to form a one half section of the header having an inturned peripheral flange or edge D and an oval half collar D thereon at the upper edge thereof, and when two sections slipped within the other, and the two riveted together, they form a complete header f with an oval collar 1) on the upper edge thereof ready to receive the connection to the steam-drum A.
In the drawings I have shown my improved connection E only between the rear header and the steam-drum. This connection E I make of a section of corrugated tube of suitable length, which corru ated tube I preferably flatten into an oval s rape and insert one end. of the same into the collar D and rivet the same therein in the usual manner, and to the under side of the steam-drum A, I rivet an oval flanged collar F which will receive the upper end of the connection E, which is then riveted therein.
I have shown the connection G between the front header C and the steam-drum A as having a flanged collar F secured to the steam-drum A made long enough to pass over the outside of the collar D on the top of the header C and be riveted thereto. I can however use a section of corrugated tube for making this connection if I so desire. By the use of this corrugated tubing for the connection E, I avail myself of the superior flexibility of the corrugations therein, and thereby form a comparatively flexible connection between the header C and the rear of the steam drum A, which operates as a yielding or flexible connection between the header and the steam-drum, and overcomes the excess expansion of the tubes B over the expansion of the steam-drum A, and thereb prevents the injurious effects thereof.
Having thus described my invention so as to enable others to utilize the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent ol' the United States is:
1. A half section of a boiler-header having an inturned peripheral flange, and a half collar projecting from its upper edge formed up from an integral plate of metal, substantially as set forth.
2. A boiler-header consisting of two substantially duplicate half sections riveted together, each of said sections having integral inturned edges and half-collars thereon, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a boiler-tubeheader having a series of water-tubes sethereof are placed together, one preferably i cured therein, a steam-drum, and a corru- I drum, and at the other to the collar on the header, substantially as set forth.
