fipecificetion of Letters Patent.
Patented May 29, 1906.
Application filed November 10, 1904;. tisrial No. 282,168-
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Gnomes D. MILLER, a citizen oi. the United States, residing at Springs, in the county of tiomerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Supcrheater for Boiler Fire-BoXes, of which the following a specification.
This invention relates generally to steamhoiiers, and. more particularly to boilers to be used in connection with traction-engines, thohgh it will be understood that the inven tion applicalide to all classes of tubular boilers.
The object of the invention is to increase the eiiiciency oi the fire-box by utilizing a portion of the heat units for the purpose of en crheating steam.
lhe invention consists in the novel features of construction and combination hereincite]: fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
lfnthe drawiiugs forming at part of this specification, Fi are l is it .ongitudinal section of a boiler provided with my improvement, and llig. 2 is a sectionel view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates a tubular boiler, and B the firebox, said box being of unusual length end terminates at the rear end in a. depending water-le C. At the forward end the fire-box. extends upwardly in front of the fire-tubes of the boilers, thereby greatly increasing the 'eiliciency of the boiler. The excessive len th of the firebox and also its excessive heig it at the forward end are YoIy material features of construction. j
For the purpose of en crheeting the steam ll employ a pipe D, wlich is coiled one or more times and is arranged in the elevated portion of the firebox in advance of the firetubes and is supported by a de ending hollow bracket it; which depein s from the crown sheet of the fire-box and contains Water, so that it will not readily burn away.
The ends of the pipe D are carried rearwardly' in erallel order beneath the end of the hoi er and are passed through thimbles F, arranged in the depending watenleg G, andto the rear or" thesaid leg one end of the pipe D win is connected to a pipe G, which extends downwardly from the steam-dome H. The steam will pass through the pipes D and G and will be thoroughly superheated 1n the 'coil and will pass to t 1e engine through the pipe G. In case it is lesired to remove the pipe I) the ends are disconnected from the i es G and Gf, and the pipe D can then be li' ted from the Water-bracket E and the ends of the pi e drawn through the thiinbles F.
A looi er fire-box constructed as herein shown and described has been found to materially increase the efficiency of the boiler as a Havin thus fully described my invent-ion, what I clhim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a stea1nboiler, a fire-box, terminat- .ing in a depending Water-leg, in combination with a superheating-pipe arranged in the firebox, and passing through the said water-leg, and a depending water-bracket for support-- ing said pipe.
2. in a stean1boile1, the combination with a firebox terminating in a depending waterleg, and extending upwardly in advance of the fire-tubes, at its forward end, of a superheatingipe arranged in said firebox, and having t 1e ends passed through the depending water-leg, a. ipe connecting the superheatingpi)e will! the steain dome, a pipe leading to t 1e engine and a depending waterbracket for sup 'iorting said pipe in the elevated portion 0 the fire-box.
3. In a steain l'ioiler, the combination with a fire-box, terminating in a depending Waterleg, and extending upwardly in advance of the iirc-tube at its forward end, of an superheating coil-pipe supported in an elevated position in the fire-box, by a depending water-bracket, the ends of the coil passing out through thiinbles arranged in the water-leg, a pipe connectin one oi these ends with the steam-dome, am 9. pi is connected to the other end of the coil lcar ing to the engine, for the purpose described.
