BED-SPRIN G.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Apni e, 1909.
Application led August '26, 190B.- l Serial vNo. 450,269.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it 4known that I, LAURA GLORE, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook-and Stateof Illinois, have invented a new and usefullm rovement in Bed-Springs, of which thefol owing is a specification.
My invention relates particularl to boxsprings for beds; and my primary o ject is to provide a thoroughly practicable and durable construction of box bed-s ring capable of being readily thrown open 4or the purpose of airing, cleaning and inspecting.
Thel invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 represents a broken plan view of a box bed-spring constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a broken vertical sectional View of the same; andFig. 3 a fragmentary view illustrating the frame and spring construction.
In the construction illustrated, A represents the frame of my 'imprgved box beds ring; B, B the marginal rows of springs; 1 the intermediate springs; C a marginal pad upholstered on t e marginal rows of springs; D a mattress-protecting pad remova ly supported on the springs; and E, a mattress removably su ported on the pad D and coplfiled against sllnfting by the marginal p The frame A ma be of any suitable construction. Prefera ly it comprises the usual angle-f0rm marginal base member a and transverse slats al, the horizontal flange of the member a supporting the marginal rows of coil springs, and the slats 'al supporting' the intermediate 'coil springs. Connected with the outer peripheral portions of the upper rings of the marginal rows of coil springs, as by wrappings 1, is a bamboo rod 2 forming an outer marginal rectangular binding for the marginal rows of springs; and connected with the inner peripheral portions of the u per rings of the marginal rows atA of springs as y bindings 3, is a wire 4, bent into rectangular form and forming an inner binding for the marginal rows of springs. The marginal rows of .springs have their top portions tilted downwardly and inwardly, eing secured in that position, as by lacings 5, thus affording an inwardly inclined base for the marginal pad C. The pad C is formed b folding a strip of canvas upon itself to ord plies-6 and 7, the edge portions of which are connected with the bamboo rod 2 andthe wire 4. The plies are separated and the s ace illedfwith a suitable pad materlal 8, t e padding being thickened at the outer portion, so as to preserve and accentuate the incline of the upper surface of the marginal pad. A ply of duck or tick material 9 is connected with the outwardly turned horizontal flange on the frame-member a.. and extended upwardly and over the marginal pad C and sewed or suitably joined to the ply 7 of canvas adjacent to the wire 4. The bottom of the box-frame is inclosed by aplly of canvas or other suitable material 10.
he tops of the. intermediate coil-springs are connected together and with the marginal rows of springs, as by lacings 11. The mattress-protecting pad D, which ma be a thin pad, comprises'plies of materia, such as duck or ticking 12, separated by padding material 13 which may be of moss. The mattress E is relatively thick and comprises plies 14 of suitable material, such as duck or ticking, and a filling 15, which may be of hair or moss according to the desired grade of the article.
The marginal portions ofthe inner, or mati tressrotecting pad, D, contact with the incline or beveled surfaces of the marginal pad C adjacent to the wire 4; -and the margmal portions of the mattress E contact with the lnclined surfaces of the marginal pad C, as clearly shown'in vFig. 2 and the upper surface of the pad E is substantially flus with the Eper outer corner of the marginal ad C.
e edge-portions of the mattress taper somewhat, `as'shown in Fig.' 2, so that the mattress will lie smoothly within the depression, or basin, which accommodates it, that is the depression which extendsabove the pad D and within the perimeter formed by the marginal pad C.
When thepad D and mattress E are in their proper places, the whole construction presents the a earance of an ordinary box ed-spring. en desired, however, the mattress and pad may be thrown back, or wholly removed, to enable the interior of the box-spring to be aired and cleaned. It is to be observed that the construction provides against any pad-forming material remaining loose or'unconfmed, thus avoiding the uncleanly and unsanitary conditions present in ordinary box-spring construction. Moreover, the marginal pad forms the basis for a comfortable seat at the edge-portions of the separated by a space of a box-spring, lwhiclri'sa desirable feature, it. bein observed that the bamboo rod 2 and v the inner marginalwire 4 connected with the marginal rows of sprin are, 'n1 practice, out four mches. Furthermore, lthe construction permits aecess to the interior of the box-spring for the purplose of repairm the same.
T e foregoing etailed description has lo-been given for clearness of understanding only, and no undue limitation is to be unvand pad. p t v 3. A box-spring comprising a rectangilar frame adapted to rest removably'on a edrows of springsl mounted on said frame and having inwar incl ined tops, a` marginal pad upholstere on lthe tops of said marginal rows of springs and presentin a hollow rectangular form with an inwar wardly inclined u per surface, bric inclosderstood therefrom. ing the sides of t e structure from the marl What I'regard as new and deslre to securegmal pad lto the frame, intermediate springs by Letters Patent 1s supported on the cross-bars of the frame, and
a mattress supported on said intermediate springs and havin movable edge-portions contacting with sald marginal pad and permitting access to the interior of the boxspring, said intermediate springs being without a permanent covering, fornthe purpose set forth. l
4. A box-spring comprising a rectan ular frame adaptedto rest removably on a edstead, mar inal rows of s thereon an having inwar y] inclined to s, an outer marginal rod connected with t e outer portions of the upper rings of said springs, an inner marginal rod connected withl the inner portions of the upper rings of said springs, a marginal pad mounted on said springs and secured to said rods and forming a hollow rectangle, s rings supported on'said frame, fabric inc osing the sides of the structure from the mar inal pad to the frame, fabric inclosing the ottom 'of the structure, the structure being left without permanent covering at the 1. YA box-spring comprising a rectan lar i frame ada ted to rest removably on a edstead and aving its lowerportion provided 'with spring-supporting bars, marginal rows of springs mounted on said frame, inner and louter marginal rods connected with the tops V of said marginal s rings, intermediate springs mounted on the ars of said frame, a marginal pad upholstered on said marginal rods and the tops of said marginal rows of springs in the form of a hollow rectangle, fabric inclosing the springs at the sides and ends of the structure from the'marginal pad tothe frame, fabric inclosing the bottom of the frame, the structure being left open at the top, and a removable mattress supported on said springsl and having its edfgle-portions .contacting with said marginal pa 2. A box-spring comprising a rectan ular frame adapted to rest removably on a ed- 35 stead, coil-springs mounted thereon,A a marginal pad surmounting the marginal rows of' springs and formin a hollow rectangle, fabric inclosing the si es of the structure from' the marginal ad to the frame, a mattressprotecting pa ,loosel mounted on the intermediate springs Wit the marginal pad, and a mattress loosely mounted on said mattress-protecting pad and having its edgeportions contacting with said marginal pad, 45 said intermediate s ring? being uncovered beneath said pad, w ere y access to the inaving its said intermediate springs and Pad,
