To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DOROTHY WiNIFRED DIKE, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Ivanhoe, Meeniyan, in the county of Buln Buln, in the district of South Gippsland, State of Victoria, Commonwealth of Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Knee-Rests and Ear Attachments for Milkin -Buckets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates broadly to buckets and the like and apprehends certain improvements in those parts thereof known as the ears, whereby during the milking of cows the bucket may be retained firmly by the milker or operator without wearisome inward pressure of the legs or knees.

In the past various devices have been proosed aiming toward the elevation of the bucket to the right height during milking operations, steadying or holding it when there and also preventing its being overturned by cow kicks. I11 many instances the bucket has been retained solely by the distressing inward pressure of the operators legs or knees. The resulting fatigue has fre uently been the cause of loss of milk by the bucket slipping from control.

An object of this invention is to provide a cheap, simple, light, compact and durable combination ear and rest, one of each of which is placed on each side of the bucket.

This invention although simple in design and construction, is not liable to derangement, nor inconvenient in use, is easily applied, does not call for any special attention and enables the operator to perform the task of milking with greater facility and despatch.

Referring to the drawings which form a part of this specificationFigure 1 is an elevation of an ear and bucket piece. A movable rest piece is removed. Fig. 2 is a plan with the movable rest piece in position. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of Fig. 2 the movable rest piece being up and the ear and bucket piece applied to portion of a bucket. Fig. I is a side elevation showing the movable rest piece down and the ear and bucket piece applied to portion of a bucket. Portion of a ucket bail is also shown.

Similar numerals of reference indicate similar or corresponding parts where they occur in the several views.

An inspection of Figs. 1 to 4 shows an ear piece 3 having an ear hole 11 therein. Be-

low the ear piece is a bucket piece 6 secured to the bucket through holes 7 In the said bucket piece is a slot 22, an intermediate stop or cross piece 28 separating the hole 11 and the slot 22. The slot 22 is longer than and therefore passes the head 23 formed upon the movable knee rest piece 5. Between the knee rest piece 5 and the head 23 is a neck 24. Protruding from the knee rest piece are stops 25. The two parts are assembled as follows :One of the stops 25 may be bent at right angles to the knee rest piece and the head of the said knee rest piece entered into and accommodated by the slot 22. It is then moved through ninety (90) degrees and the stops 25 bent back again connecting or retaining the knee rest piece. When the knee rests are up and supporting the bucket the neck bears up underneath the slot top, and the head and the stops press upon the bead 26 around the bucket top.

I/Vhen a cow is to be milked the bucket is placed underneath the cows udder and the milkers knees are then placed beneath the knee rest pieces 5. The area of these latter as also their shape will depend largely upon circumstances. The bucket is preferably lifted underneath the cows udder by catching hold of the lower end of the drop knee rest pieces. As these are lifted they reach an angle of ninety (90) degrees (more or less) with the bucket side and the bucket commences to lift. The knees are then placed underneath the drop knee rest pieces and milking operations commence. The bail or bucket handle 9, when not in use, drops upon one of the stops 25 on each side of the bucket, depresses the stop and raises thelower end of the said knee rest pieces. The bucket is then ready for placing between the knees and can be lifted into position either from the outer ends of the knee rest pieces or by the hands catching hold of the bead 26.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is.-

1. In combination knee rest and car attachments for milking buckets, an ear piece having an ear hole therein, a slot within a bucket piece, said slot accommodating and retaining the neck of a knee rest piece movable therein by the elevation or falling of the bail or bucket handle.
