Description

waited gt-interi @wat @Wire WILLIAM` H.` CUMMINGS AND HORACE-L. CHlLDS, OF BOONES.-
' BOROUGH, IOWA.
Letters Patent No. 91,'1 21, dated Jane 22, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOWS. p
The Schedule referredto in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all whom it may concern: i
`marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in the eonstrue` tion of a corn-plow, and in the manner of attaching the plow-beams to the axle, and of raising the plows from the ground, as will hereafter be shown.
Figure l is a sectional view of `our plow.
Figure 2 is a. plan view of the same.
Letter A represents the axle, which is supported by -beams can bc swung, around to any desired angle.
In order to strengthen these rods C, met-al braces E have been attached to the lower ends, and which' are then secured to the cross-piece F extending across the tongue.
llaced in the rear of each ot' the driving-wheels, there is a shield, G, supported by rods, extending back from the axle, so as to prevent the plow-beams from rubbing against the wheels, as they are swun,r around from side to side.
Attached to the front ends of the plow-beams D, on the outersides, there are flat metal plates, which are bent so as to pass over the rods C, and then are pivoted to them, so` as to allow thebeams to be either raised vertically, or moved to any desired angle. 'lo
cach one of these beams there are attached-two plows and a handle, by means of which they are governed.
rlhe brace H, attached to each of the forward or -front plows, has several holes inade in it, so that this plow can be raised entirely free from the earth, when not wanted. p I
To each one ofthe beams on the rear ends, there is secured a metal plate, I, which has aslot ont through Secured to the tops of therod C, are two long metal 1'0ds,`L, which extend backwardsover the beams, and pass through the slotted plates I. These rods have a shoulder formed upon them, so that they can be made to catch in these plates, and thus hohl the plows suspendedabove the ground, while going to or from the elds, or while turning corners. llhe beams Dare just far enough apart vfor a plow to work upon each side of a row ofcorn.
Having thus described our invention, v That wc claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
l. The arrangement of the bar F, braces E E, rods C C, beams D D, and rods L L, all substantially as set forth. f
Y 2. The shields or guards G, when used to protect the plow-beams, substantially as set forth and described.
rlhe combination of the plow-beams. D, rodsV C and L, shields G, braces E, and plate I, when all are used in the manner and for the purpose set fort-h.
In testimony that we claim the ib1egoin,f we have hereunto set our hands, this 19th day of April, 186i).
