To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known. that I, GrcERo'P. NORTON, l of Prairie City, county of Jasper andY State of yIowa, have l invented .certain Improvements in Cultivators, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of erally known as straddle-row cultivators; and the invention consists -in so constructing the main frame,. and in so connecting the supportin g-runners therewith', that either runner may be advanced forward of the other, throwing `the transverse bar or bars of the mainframe diagonal with the line of Vproally, of each other-will not, in any way, disturb or interfere with the operations and relative changes of position of the mainframe and runners, as h'ereinbefore set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a top view of a cultivator embodying my in vention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view Y of Fig. 1'.'` Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the forward endof vone of the plow-beams and Fig. 4 is a detail top view of the same.
Referring-to the parts by letters, letters A -A represent the side bars of the mainI frame,
connected by transverse bars B B"B, `which are pivoted to'the bars A A by bolts() C C O, v l the bars' B B being placed, the one above, and the other-below, the lside bars'A A. D
vis the tongue, passing lback between the barsl B' B, to which it is pivoted by a'bolt, d, andr `is pivoted, at its rear end, by a bolt, d', ltothe bar B. E E are Ithe runners, attached to,
land supporting, the main framein Aan elevated position, as plainly shown inthe drawings. 'G G areI the p1ow-beams, to the Vrear ends of. which are-attached handles H H, plow-standards I I II, plows -or .shovels J J J J, and braces .k in thefordinary manner.
my invention relates to improvements. in that class of implements gen-- To .the sides if the forward ends of the-plowbeams' Gr Gr are `securelyf boltedthe plates K, which are'made in the form' andv manner shown in the,drawing--that is to say," upon the upper edges of their forward parte are formed upwardly-projecting parts, which are made thicker than'the bodies ofthe plates K, or have 'inwardly-proj ecting liianges formed upon their upper or lcurved edges, as shownV in Figs. 3 and 4. To and between thelower parts of the forward ends of the plates'K is pivoted a block, L, by 'a bolt passing-through 4the' said plates `and block, as shownin Fig.
3. M.M are rods,l1aving.heads formed-upon their lower ends,"which 'rodspass up vertically throughholes injtlidbleck's L." The for1 ward 'ends of the upwardly-projecting parts of the plates K are connectedwith a bolt, Je', as shown in- Figs. 1, 2, 3,. and 4, so that they may be drawn-toward eachl other, to bear against the rods M, and to take up the wea-r.
This construction allows the rear parts of the plow-beams to have a'free vertical and lateral movement, and, at the same time, will f 'always hold the plows ina vertical position.
' The rods` M pass up through the'forward ends of' the slots inthe clasps or 'blocks N,
Awhich are placed and. fit between the bars B' B', andrwhich are secured in place by the wedge-keysO, driven into the, rear ends` of the slotssin the said blocks at the `rear edgesl ofthe bars'B B. .In th f 'rward edges of thel bars 'B' B are formeda numberof notches to receive the rods M, 'so that the said rods maybe held securely in place, and, at the same time, kept in a vertical position.
This construction enables thev enlls oftheplow-beams to be 'readily and lquickly raised and lowerefhand moved'toward and from each other, when required.; l
To 'the rear ends of :the 'side bars A A are attached rods 1),having hooks 'formedfupon their lower ends, upon which the bracerods of the-plow-standards may be hooked to hold the plows away from the ground when 'passa ing fromplace to place. u.
v'lhe'dotted lines at Fig. 1 show plainly the Y manner in whicheither sideofthe main frame may beadvauced'whi-le the other'side is remain undisturbed iu their parallel vposition used which do not pull steadily, and one or tlie tarded, and either plow beamoscillated laterally or vertically, while the runners will re- With each other and with the line ci progression; the advantages of which will be evident t0 any oneskilled in the usey of straddle-roW cultivators, especially in turning at the ends of rows of plants, and when draft-animals are other ofwhich is freq advance of the other.
I claim- The main frame A B, and runners E, ar-
uently or continually in ranged, relatively to each other, so that either sideof the main frame, together with its vrunner,may be advanced, and'either plow-beam vertically 'or laterally os'cillated, without disturbing the parallelism `of the runners with each other or with the line of progression, substantially as described, and'for the purpose specie CIGERO P. NORTON.
