OSWALD R. MAYER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
LOGSE-LEAF BINDER.
Application filed November 27, 1908.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, @sn/'ALD It. Marne, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Detroit, in the county of "filavne and State of Michigan, have invented a nen' .l Improved Loose-Leaf Binder, of which the following is a specification.
This improvement relates to means for securing together loose leaves olf-paper, sheets of cloth or other materials, with or n ithout a cover, and the object of this invention is to provide a hinder that shall he simple, e'l'licient and durable, and that can. he produced at a lon' cost.
liljv invention consists in. a two part hinder, the main part formed hv a har with semicircular portions at each end, in planes at right angles to the har; the locking part also being a har with its ends formed to engage the ends of the seinicircular portions.
In the accompanying dran. ings, Figure l is a perspective vie-a' of my improved hinder. Fig. 2 is a' vier-f of the locking part. Fig. 3 is an end view of a number of loose leaves held together with this hinder and rolled up. Ilig. is a plan of the hinder together irith a cover. Fig. 5 is an end view of the same with leaves indicated by hrohen lines. Ilig. (l is a view of a inodiiied forni of the invention.
Similar reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
This hinder can he made of resilient metal rods of aniT desirahle cross section, and for hinders four inches long, round steel rods one eighth inch in diameter are quite eilicient. rIhe main portion is formed hy the bar l and parallel curved parts 2 having holes 3 at the ends. The curved parts are referahlv in )lanes at riO'ht anOles to the l) o l 53 I I duced to enter the holes 1n the ends of the har. The locking har il has curved portions 5 and reduced ends 6 which enter the holes 8.
To connect the parts, the pin 6 is entered into one hole 3 and the parts 2 are sprung together so that the second pin 6 can enter the other hole 3 when the resilience of the metal will hold the parts locked. To disconnect them, the operation is reversed. Loose leaves, properly perforated, may be placed over the parallel parts 2, as shown in Fig. 3, and the whole rolled up into a compact body.
In Figs. 4 and 5, a cover is shown having boards 8, and hinged portion 9 provided with metal eyelets l0. After disconnecting the lock har the curved portions 2 can be so moved ont of the eyelets of one hoard that sheets 1l can he taken ont or more of them pnt in.
Instead of forming the lock har with hooks 5 so that the pins 6 may enter the holes 3 from the outside, the lock har maT be made straight as shown in Fig. 6. In this case the har l2 also has pins 13 at its ends which may he placed in the holes 3 when the parts 2 are sprung apart. T he har 1 forms a good handle whereby the hook of Figs. 4 and 5 may be carried or hung np.
Having now explained my improvements, what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A loose leaf binder consisting of two parts, one of the parts being a har having parallel curved portions at its ends, the ends of the curved portions loeing perforated, the other part extending between the curved portions and having reduced ends to enter said holes.
2. A loose leaf hinder consisting of a main portion of resilient metal having its ends curved and perforated and a separate locking portion extending between the ends of the main portion and engaging in the perforations in the same.
3. A loose leaf hinder consisting of two parts, one consisting of a straight har having its ends curved parallel to cach other in planes at right angles to the har and perforated, and a second straight har having its ends curved back in the same plane and rei'irst part.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two suhscrihing Witnesses.
