H l 3 A L 4 I vI THE Nomars Psrzns cu msn "Uhl Application filed .ulv 26,
To all whom it may concern: y
Be 1t known that 1, l/munir O. KYLE, a citizen of the United States oi America, residing at Midvale, 1n the county o'l' rfuscarawas and `State of Ohio, have invented Specification oi Letters Patent.
certain new and useiiul improvements in Fence-Posts, oi which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to fence posts, and the primary obj ect of my invention is to provide a metallic post of a rigid and durable construction for supporting rails or wires.
A further object of this invention is the provision of positive and reliable means in' connection vth a metallic tence post for detachably holding wires and rails in engagement with said post. Y
lVith the above and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be presently described and claimed.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a rail Yfence constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a perspect've view oi one of the posts, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of the same, Fig. l is a perspective View of one of the rail fasteners, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of a rail constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 6 is an elevation of a post with Wires clamped thereto, Fig. 7 is a horizontal sectional view of the same, and Fig. 8 is a vertical sectional view oi' a portion of the post.
In the drawings, 1 designates a plate or body portion having an inverted wedgeshaped base 2. rihe plate 1 is furthermore provided with side and end flanges 3, d, respectively which extend at right angles with respect to the plate 1 and provide a box-like structure. The base 2 is adapted to be located in the ground whereby a lirm foundation is formed for the post when used in connection with a fence. The side 'langes 3 are notched as at 5 for the reception of the rails 6, these latter being grooved as at 7 to enable the rails to be supported upon the lower walls of the notches 5 and when the rails are positioned in the notches 5, the walls of the grooves with respect to the walls of the notches will prevent longitudinal and vertical displacement of the rails. The

5 is provided with vertically extending elongated slots 8 through which extends the threaded shank Q orn angular clamping meinbers 10. rlhese latter are positioned upon the upper and outer faces of the rails 6 for retaining` them in engagement with the post. The members 9 are retained in clamping position through the medium oi' the nuts 11 which are threaded upon the free ends of the shanlrs 9.
ln order that the same clamps can be used for holding wire in engagement with the post, l provide the rear edges ol' said clamps with if -shaped notches 12, these notches being designed to receive triangular vertical rods 18, which bind the wires 14 forming the panels oi the fence, to the metallic posts. lt will thus be observed that the clamps or fasteners can be used for a rail or wire tence, it being only necessary to use the rods 13 when the panels of the tence are formed of Wire, The posts are painted or coated to prevent corrosion and can be mounted in concrete foundations.
Having new descrihed my invention what l claim as new, is :e-
1.. A fence post comprising a plate having side and end ltlanges, said plate having vertical slots formed therein, threaded Shanks movahly mounted in said slots, angular clamps carried. by said Shanks, said clamps having J --shaped notches formed therein, triangular vertical rods adapted to lit in said notches for binding wires in said posts, and iuts screwed upon said Shanks for holding said clamps within said posts.
2. A fence post comprising a plate having side and end flanges, said plate having vertical slots formed therein, angular clamps adjustalolj,T mounted in said posts, said clamps having ii-shaped notches formed therein, and rods mounted in said notches for hindin g wires in said posts.
A. tence post comprising a vertically eX- tending slotted plate provided fith side and end anges, and a clamping means associating with the post and consisting of a screwthreaded shank extending through the slot of the plate, said shanl-i having one end provided with a nut and its other end terminating in an angle-shaped member extending at right angles with respect to the shank, said angle-shapcd member having the horizontal leg thereof provided with notches.
Li. A fence post comprising a vertically eX- plate in a plane horizontal with the notches tending slotted plate provided with. side and end flanges, and. a clamping means associating with. the post and consisting` of a sorewthreaded shank extending through the slot of the plate, said shank having one end provided. with a nut and its other end torininating in an angle-shaped member extemiing at right angles with respect to tire shank, said angioesi'iaped ineii'iber having tire irorizontai ieg tirereof provided with notoires, said shank positioned approximate y eentraiiy with rospeot to the Jfioriontai ieg of said me; er and said member of a iengtn as to extend in Close proximity to the inner' faoe of the side flanges of tire plate.
5. A fence post comprising a Vertoaii'y eX'- te'nding slotted plate having side and end flanges, a screw-threaded member eXtending 'iirougir the slot of the iate, a nut carried on one end of said inenroer, an angieehaped momia or positioned 1oetwecm the side flanges of the pirate, said angie-shaped member having the upper leg thereof extending riorizontaiiy and formed integral with said screw-threaded member approximately centrally thereof, said iorizontai' iange of said angie-shaped member provided with a notch at eaon side of tiro srank.
in testinironj,T whereof aiix iny signature in tno presence oi' two Witnesses. Y
