Description

J. GAMBLE.
BASE BALL MITT.
APPLIUATION FILED 1150.2,19os- Patented Mar. 30, 1909.
IN/ZENTOR eff Tg5 NoRms Ps1-:Rs col. w
mariani JOHN GAMBLE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE A. REACH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BASE-BALL MIT?.
Application led December 2, 1908.
10 all 'whom it may concern:
Be it knovrn that I, JOHN GAMBLE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a nenv and useful Improvement in Base-Ball Mitts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in base ball mitts, and pertains particularly to the glove piece in padded mitts made of separable front and back sections by Which the mitts are secured upon the hand of the wearer.
rlie object of my invention is to provide strengthening or reinforcing pieces embracing the glove piece and bach section of the mitts at the places Where the greatest strain occurs in use, whereby is attained a more durable structure of the back of mitts of said class than has heretofore been produced., and thus overcoming the tendency of same to rip or tear under the force of impact of the ball.
To these ends, my invention includes the combination and arrangement of component parts to be hereinafter' described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention, in which like characters designate similaiparts, Figure l is a top plan vieiv thereof, and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 2-2 of F ig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of one side of the back of a mitt showing my reinforcing pieces with the wrist strap removed.
My invention includes, generally, a front and back section of base ball mitts adapted to be laced or otherwise separably united at their outer edges and contain therein padding material, a glove piece stitched upon the back section, and reinforcing pieces embracing the rear end of the glove pieces and stitched to the back section of the mitt and laced therewith to the front section thereof.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 designates the front or palm section of a base ball mitt and 2 indicates the back section thereof adapted to be laced together through eyelets 3 on their outer adjacent edges to confine the padding l carried therein.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 30, 1909.
Serial No. 465,675.
Secured upon the back section 2 of the mitt is a glove piece 5 which is provided With the usual linger portions 6 and thumb portion 7. Said glove piece, as shown, has a cut-out portion at S over the baclr of the hand and Wrist of the wearer, and is secured upon the hand by the strap 9 and buckle l0, stitched upon the opposite sides of the cut out portion. The glove piece 5 is preferably attached to the back section 2 of the mitt by a roW of stitching il adjacent to the outer edge thereof.
It Will be apparent that the greatest strain upon the glove piece 5 and the back section 2 ofthe mitt, in use, occurs adjacent to the opposite ends of the strap 9 and buckle 10, Which tends to rip or tear the glove piece and back section, thus destroying the use of the glove. For the purpose of overcoming such Weakness, I provide reinforcing pieces 12 and I2 at the rear ends of the glove piece, which, as sho vn, embrace the rear portions of the glove piece 5 and are stitched thereto and to the back section 2 of the mitt, and are also secured to the back section 2 by the eyelets 3 and thus laced therewith to the front section l of the mitt. Such construction and attachment of the reinforcing pieces l2 and l2 removes the strain upon the glove piece and seams attaching same tothe bach of the mitt, and distributes the strain over al greater space and prevents the ripping and tearing of the back section and glove piece of the mitt.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a base ball mitt, the combination with a front section and a back section, of a glove piece, having a rear cut-out portion, attached to the back section, reinforcing pieces embracing the rear free ends of said glove piece and stitched thereto and to the said back section, and a Wrist strap secured to the glove piece and to the said reinforcing pieces, substantially as described,
2. In a base ball mitt, the combination with a front section and a back section adapted to be laced together, of a glove piece stitched to said back section, reinforcing pieces embracing the rear free ends of said glove piece and secured thereto and to the said back section, said reinforcing pieces eX- signed my name to this specification, in the tendilg to lohe outil' edge of thelloack section presence of JILWo subecribing Witnesses. and ein aced t ereWith to t e front sec- T tion of thge Initt, and a Wrist strap secured to JGLIN GAMBLE 5 the glove piecey and to the said reinforcing Witnesses:
pieces, substantially as described. ALLEN C. MIDDLETON,
