in the drawings, the book holder cone prises extension members in the form of flat bars or strips slidably engaging one another and being held together by guide lugs or lips 6 whereby the said members can be lengthened or shortened to accommodate the same The lowermost bent on itself upwardl y and inwardly to form a hook terminal 7 which is adapted to engage and surround the lower edge of a book when in an open position.

Secured to the hook terminal 7 is a transverse rod or bar 8 which is adapted to overlie and span a considerable area of the book when in an open position to hold its leaves open and prevent the accidental turning thereof. On the outer free end of the upper member 5 is mounted a clip or clamp the same comprising a plate 9 secured to said member and it being split tO'fOIIII a central between pivot ears 11 carrying a pin 12 forming a pivot of a clamping jaw or head 13 which is hingedly connected to the said plate by the pivot pin 12 and is maintained in its open or closed position by the spring tongue acting upon the same. The said hinged head or jaw is adapted to be brought into position to overlie the upper edge of the open book and engage the 1 i leaves thereof and carried by the said head or is a transverse rod 14 the latter adapted to span and overlie a considerable area of the open book to maintain its leaves in an open position and to prevent the closing of said book. i

The device is light and simple and can be used on book shelves in a rack or it is adaptable for use with sheet music. ov

In applying the book holder or device the members 5 are extended according to the cngth of the book to which it is to be applied and which members are positioned across the cover of a book at thepoint of the hinge eon-v nection of the covers so as to have the hook terminal engage the lower edge of the book and have its transverse rod 8 span the open leaves of said book and then theclainping head or jaw is thrown over the upper edge of the book to have its transverse rod span and overlie the leaves of the open book whereby the said leaves will be held smooth and pre vented from turning and the closingof the book is prevented.
