No. 91e,e91.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 29, 1908.
Patented March so, 1909. serial 1%. 440,902.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. FEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and usefu- Improvements in Trolling-Spoons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the provision of a trolling-spoon which will veeringly dart as it travels through the water to take a zigzag course in a horizontalplane and afford a peculiarly effective lure for fish.
To such ends, the invention consists in the novel configuration of a spoon as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of a trolling spoon embodying my invention.
According to this invention, the spoon is constructed of a metallic plate having a plane forward portion, or shank, A, and a curved rear portion B which is formed with a shallow bowl C which is arranged s mmetrically with respect to the longitudinal axis of the spoon. In forming this spoon the rear extremity D of said curved portion is disposed to be in the same plane, or nearly so, wlth that of the shank A, and the intermedlate curved portion is arranged to project to one side of such plane, as clearly represented in Fig. 2. In proximity of the front and rear ends, respectively, of the spoon are apertures E and F to afford means for attaching the line, as by a swivel connection G at the front, and the hooks H which are trailed from the rear.
The spoon may be made of any material,
as brass, nickel silver, or compositions of metals, and can be made of any'required size and finish.
The operation of the spoon is obvious. The actions of the spoon in the water are notably different from that of any other spoons with which I am familiar When it is employed in trolling with a fishing line of ordinary length and is dragged at moderate or relatively fast speeds the spoon is maintained to be vertlcal, as represented in Fig. 1, however erratic may be the successive darting movements of spoon, and which is peculiar to this spoon. Furthermore the spoon is peculiar in the vibratile or uivering effects to which it is subjected 1n the several such darting movements.
What I claim, is-
1. A trolling spoon having a flat front portion and a curved rear ortion projectin outside the plane of the rontportion and terminating at the rear in the plane of the flat portion.
2. A trolling spoon comprised of'a flat front portion and a curved rear portion which is provided with a bowl shaped. concavity, said curved portion projecting to one side of the plane of said flat portion.
3. A trolling spoon formed of a fiat shank and a curved portion which terminates in the plane of the shank, said curved portion being formed with a bowl shaped concavity and disposed to be upon one side of said plane.
