Be it known that I, SAMUEL D. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Voodlawn, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fishing.l.ackle, of which the following is a specilication.

This invention relates to certain improvements in fishing-tackle, and particularly in that class of devices or spoons which are employed for casting or trolling; and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character of a simple and inexpensive nature and of a light, strong, and improved construction, which shall be adapted when drawn through or over the water to move or dart in various directions, so as to imitate the movc.

The invention consists in certain novel features of the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts of the improved device, whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is made simpler, cheaper, and otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use than various other similar devices heretofore in use, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which serve to illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a casting or trolling device or spoon constructed according to my invention; and Fig. 2 is an edge view of the body portion of the device, the hooks shown in connection therewith in Fig. 1 being omitted in this view. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken through the device in the plane indicated by line a 1/ in Fig. 2.

As shown in the views, the improved casting or trolling device is formed of a body portion which may be cut and bent up in a single piece from suitable sheet metal as sheet aluminium, for example -this material being especially well adapted for such use by reason of its whiteness and light weight, and said body portion comprises a flattened central part 1, perforated at its forward end for connection with a wire loop 2, with which may be connected a clasp 3 for the connection of the device with a turnbuckle or swivel 4: held upon the line 5, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

The flattened central part 1 of the device is provided at its opposite edges with longitudinally-extended wings or flanges 6 6, which are bent or turned over, as shown in Fig. 3, in opposite directions from the respective edges whereon they are formed, and in the flanges or wings 6 6 at opposite sides of the device are provided openings 7 T, oppositely located and adapted to receive eyes 8 8, with which may be connected hooks 9 9 of any desired character, dependent upon the conditions. As herein shown, the hooks 9 are treble ones, but it will be evident that this is immaterial to my invention and single hooks may as well be employed.

At the rear end of the flattened central part 1 of the device are arranged rotatory blades 10 10 of a spiral or screw-like nature, which are oppositely directed and are adapted, in conjunction with the curvcd or bent wings or flanges 6 6 above referred to, to impart a twisting or rotative movement to the device when drawn over or through the water, and said blades 10 are preferably constructed, as herein shown, integrally with the body portion of the device, being produced by slitting the rear part of the metal blank from which the device is formed in such a way as to produce three parts, the two outer or lateral parts being afterward bent up to form the said blades 10, as will be clearly understood. The central part of the rear end of the device produced by such slitting of the blank from which the device is formed is left extending rearwardly behind the central flattened part and behind the blades 10 10, as clearly shown at 11 on the drawings, and said rear extension 11 of the body portion lies in the same plane with the flattened central part 1 and acts, in the operation of the device in casting or trolling, to steady the spoon in its movement through or over the water. The improved lure or spoon constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and inexpensive nature and is very light and strong, and by reason of its structure is adapted to closely imitate the movements of a fish in swimming, so as to render the device especially well adapted for use in casting or trolling, and it will be obvious from the above description that the device is capable of considerable modification without material departure from the principles and spirit of the invention, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form and arrangement of the several parts of the device herein set forth in carrying out my invention in practice.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A device of the character described comprising a body portion adapted for the attachment of hooks and having means for connection with a line or the like and provided at its forward end with a part extended at angles from it and directed in advance of said means for connection with a line or the like.

2. A device of the character described comprisinga body portion having oppositely bent wings or flanges extended along its opposite sides and adapted for the attachment of hooks, said body portion having at its forward part means for connection with a fish-line or the like and havinga part extended at angles from it in advance of said means for connection of a line or the like.

3. Adevice of the character described comprising a body portion having means for con nection with a fish-line or the like and having a part extended at angles from it and in advance of said means for connection with the line, said body portion being adapted for at- .partand a rearward extension in the same plane with the flattened central part and extended behind said blades.
