UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
ALBERT WILSGH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HAMMOCK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT WVrLsoH, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hammock-Stands, of which the following is a complete specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hammock stands and more particularly to a hammock stand adapted to be readily set up or taken apart when desired.
The object of this invention is to provide a hammock stand of such simple construction that it may be set up or taken down with a minimum amount of labor.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a hammock stand in which the connection between the standards or uprights is very strong and rigid but which is capable of being quickly disconnected.
The invention consists of the matters hereinafter described in the s )eciiication and more fully pointed out and defined in the appended claim.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the connecting bar.
As shown in said drawings: AA indicate standards or uprights on the lower ends of which are rigidly engaged cross legs B which extend on either side thereof a sufficient distance to brace the standards against the lateral swing of the hammock C. Said legs may be of any preferred construction but as shown each comprises a straight bar having at its ends, and on the under side thereof, feet 6 adapted to raise the bars slightly above the sipporting surface on which the device is place Said standards are connected to gether by means of a connecting bar D, which as shown is provided near each end with a transverse notch or recess (Z in the upper face thereof adapted to receive one of the legs B. Sub-standards d are engaged to the ends (1 of said bar D and extend upwardly on the outer faces of the standards A and are engaged thereto by means of screws (1 or in any other preferred manner. Said sub-standards may be engaged to the bar D in any preferred manner but as shown they are dove-tailed thereto and are adapted to be removed by simply slipping the joint. On the inner face of each standard is a block a Specification of Letters Patent.

and hinged thereto by means of hinges a are the swinging braces a", the lower ends of which are adapted to engage against abutment blocks (Z on the bar D. Hooks c are provided on the inner face of the standards and adapt the hammock to be hung at varying heights.
In assembling the device the connecting bar D is laid down and the standards are placed over it with the cross legs seated in the notches (Z, and with the lower ends of the braces a abutting against the blocks (1*. The sub-standards are then slip ed into place in the ends (1 and secured to the standards by the screws (1. The strain of the hammock is exerted inwardly on the tops of the standards and they are prevented from tilting inwardly by the braces (L The bottoms of the standards are prevented from raising and withdrawing the legs from their seats by reason of the connection between the sub-standards and the connecting bar, and are prevented from swinging outwardly by reason of the legs seating in the notches (6.
Obviously a hammock stand constructed in accordance with. my invention may be quickly assembled and taken apart when desired and affords a very strongand simple construction.
Obviously also many details of form and construction may be varied without departing from the principles of my invention.
claim as my invention:
In a device of the class described the combination with a horizontal bar having a notch in its upper side adjacent each end thereof, of a transverse leg seated in each notch, feet on the ends of said legs, a standard rigidly secured to each leg above said bar, a substandard at each end of said bar and having a slip-joint connection therewith, means securing the sub-standards to the standards, blocks rigidly secured on the top of said bar, and a brace hinged on each standard and adapted to abut at its lower end against one of said blocks.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
