Specification Letters Patent.
7 Patented March 23, 19,09.
Application flled December 14, 1906. Serial No. 347,848.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB LAMBERTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kewanee, in the county of llcnryznnd State of Illinois, have invented a. new and useful Im rovement in Pine-Pullers, of which the fol owing is a speci cation.
This invention relates to pipe pullers and more particularly vto devices for handling furnaces, the object being to provide a device that will rip a pair of tongs carrying the pipe and raw the sanie out- Wardly as the pipe comes out of the furnace. Withthis an other objects in view, the
- invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part ofv this specificationzfFigure 1 is a. perspective view of my improved pipe puller. Fig. 2 is a top lan'view of a portion of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view showing the manner of connecting the bench to the stand. Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of the puller ihowing the jaw of .the carrier open. I Fig. 5 is a sideclevational view of the puller, showing the jaw of the carrier closed on a pipe of tongs. Figll 6 is a section taken on lines 6 -6 ig. 7 is a. perspective view of the carrier. Fig. 8 is a perspectiye vie'n' ofthe jaw. Fig. 9 is an inverted perspective view of the carrier.
Referring to the drawings A and B indicate I which is mounted u. pin J on which is mount ed the apertured shank K, of a. curved jaw K, "uhich is adapted to clamp thetongs on the same then being pulled outwardly. lhe shank of the jaw projects downward y through the slot in the bench and is provided with a slot K, adjacent its end in which is mounteda rod L, provided a ith an e e at each end to one end of v'hich one en of a.
or tn ice around a grooved pullcyN, carried by a shaft 0, mounted in brac win 0', se-
The cable is then extended forwardly up over, a pulley P, mounted in bearings l", secured to each side of the slot in the leg G, o[ the bench and is connected to the eye at the other end of the rod L, so that the carrier can be worked back and forth on the truck and it nill be seen that the downwardly on the Gitl'l'lel W hen traveling outwardly so as to glip the ipe and v. ill be draw-n open as it travels bac (v ardly so as to release the pipe. A drive heel Q'is fixed on the end of the cd to be connected crating the some. 7
At the present time, wrought iron pipes are pulled by a chain which is very clumsy and expensive, as it requires three men to hook the tongs carrying the sheet of metal to the chains, while with my improved puller, one mancun do the same work as all the mun has to do is to clam sheet of metal in the Furnace when it reaches an electric motor for opcured to each side of the slot of the leg A.
a pair of tongs on a- 4 reduced end 0' of the top C,'betreen 'Ihich a pair of slotted legs on vi hich is mounted a top 0 which is connected to the legs A by; braces forming a stand. One end of the top beyond the leg B and is re- C projects out duo-ed at C. A strip E is secured under the the right heat, then place on a bell which is adapted to be arranged in a head-block adapted to be secured on the end of the bench all of which are of the ordinary con struction. As the carrier block on the bench comes to the end of the bench and is reversed ,IS ivotally mounted on a pin F, the reduced end G, of the tog of abcnch G, which is supported by legs 1} connected thereto by races G, G. The top of the bench is provided with a longitudinal slot to each side of which is secured a tmck ll on which is mounted the carrier block I, which is provided with do'vvnvrnrdly.projcctin sides 1, adapted to fitovor said track. 'l 10 carrier block is'providod with a beveled front end l and the top is cut out at I and inclinoddox 'un'ardly at I", and bifurcatednt I" having up Y crtured enlargements forming bearings t is.
automatically and draw the sheet of metal through the bell forming it into n ipc and as the carrier reaches the other end up the bench and is reversed, the jaw will be opened automatically so that the tongs can be readily taken out.
llnvlng thus fully described my invention, \rlmt I i-lain! as now and desire to secure by Lotti-rs lniout is;
l. 'ifho rombinution with a bench having it slot formed therein, of a carrier mounted on the jaw of the some will close on the tongs cable M, is connected, \'-lll('-l1 is t: isted once jaw. will be drawn 7 Shaft o, to tint-i1 is ndnpti said bench provided with e jaw having a shank working in said slot and connected to a cable for the purpose described.
2. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a bench having a longitudinel slot formed therein; of a track secured on said bench, a carrier arranged on said track a ivoted jew carried by said carrier working in said slot, and a, cable connected to said jaw, for the purpose described.
3. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a bench heving a slot formed in its top, of trecks secured to the top of the bench to each side of said slot, a; carrier mounted on said tracks, a jaw rivets slly moiinted' on said carrier having a s otted shank extending down through said slot in the top of the bench and a rod working in said top, a jaw pivotally'mounted on said carrier provided with a, slotted shank extending down through saidslot in the to of the bench, a rod wor in said slot end e cable connected 'to the en s of the rod, for: the purpose described.
