Y W. M. WOOD, OF OwiNes MILLS, MARYLAND.
Letters Patent No. 91,584, dated June 22, 1869.
To all whom 'it may conce/rn.- Y
VBe it known that I, W. M. WOOD, a resident of Owings Mills, in the county -of Baltimore, in Ythe State 0f Maryland, have invented a new and improved Apparatus for Detaching Boats; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full and exact description thereof.
4The natureoi'my invention consists in a bar running through the projection at each end, over which hook curved links,
which are made fastto the bottom ofthe falls The- When it becomes necessary to detach the boat, it is done by depressing the lever, which causes the har to revolve, thus throwing the points ot' the projections up, and allowing the links to slip Oi.
The ends B ofthe bar Aare made separately, each with the projection c forged upon it. Th
' to the stern-post g and stern-post h, and the journals e work in bearings t' in the heads j of' the vertical When the ends B are completed, the braces D should be placed on the 'journals e, and the ends l Welded to the ends O of the end-piece B, which should be of metal or other suitable material of Vrequisite strength and length. This welding should be so done that the projections c shall lie in the same plane.
A lever, I, is attached tothe bar A, of such lengthV as to snit the depth ot' the boat, and should be se-V curely axed to the bar A by either keying or weldthe projections cuvill inclineI downward, on the lo ing, and in such position that when it is horizontal PPO' site side'ot the barA, at an angle of' about seventy degrees, (709.) v
The bar A may he either above or. below the thwarts,
to prevent lateralmotion.'
The hooks s are sufcient strength fto bear the weight of boat when end, rt, open, and
curved outward and upward, in such manner that its interior upper curve shall `conform to the circumference of the end, B,of the bar A.
i 'lhe` middle part of thelinkis closed. The other end, y, is open, to receive a' hook -or rope..-
Blocks F are placed under each end ot' the bar, for
Athe points of the projections c to rest upon when the s from being-attached on the vwrong side of the bar A,
and' from detaching or dropping off, should the strain upon them be relieved prematurely.
Upemtz'on. v
Press down the lever I'until the projections c stano at right angles to the keel of the boat.` Place the hooks s over, andenclosin them. Return the lever I to itsposition against the thwart z, and the attachment isefl'ee'ted. A
To detach, press down the lever I until the projections c stand at an angle of about seventy degrees keel of the boat, whereupon the strain will cause the hooks s to slip off the projections c, and the boat is free. Y
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The projections c, the block F, and the hooks s, in
combination with Athe bar A and lever I, arranged and operated forV the purpose substantially as described.Y M. WOOD.
