@tige ,rlgemle marit tu it tlgese mitm @anni lmit mating tutt' nf tlgetame.' y
Tov ALL wHoM IT MAY coNc'nnN;
Be it known that I, JAMES. R. TAYLOR, of the ycity, county,- and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful vimprovements in Apparatus for Detaching Boats; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, c'lear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, in which* Figure l represents a sectional elevation of the apparatus' as attached to .a boat.
Figure 2 represents a vertical section of the apparatus as it'wo'uld appear when disconnected from th boat; and
Figure 3 represents a top plan of the bow 'of a boat with the'detaching apparatus in place.4 The object and purpose of my invention areV to launch a -life or other boatin a heavy sea by means of an apparatus connected to and operated from the boat, and with safetylto the crew. J And my invention consists in combining with the hinged hooks by which the boat is suspended a reinforce or secondary hook, which takes into a mortise in the strapframe, and relieves the pivot ofthe hinge of the main hook from much of the strain upon it. And in connection'with the; trip, forallowing the main hook to open, my'invention consists in giving itsuch a' form that, after it has been swung partially away `from the hook, the latter will aid in throwing it out, and thus relieving itself quickly and with certainty. l i i To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the samevvith reference to the drawings;
At the bow of the boat, and to the stem-post A, or otherwise, I fasten a head-piece, B, which has straps, c,
running down the stern-post and securely fastened-to it. To this head-piece,B, is -pivotcd a hook, D, which,
when down, passesinto a seat, a, in a projection, E, which may be a part Aof the head-piece In this position a cam or eccentric lever, F, is swung around against the hook,` and locks it 4in that position. .I .On' the hook D, beyond its pivoted point c, (as shown more distinctly in iig. 2,) there is a reinforce or secondary hook, e, which, as. the hook is ylet or shut down, takes into a mortise in the head, and holds under a solid portionof it, thus relieving the pivot of much of the weight of tl1,e boat,crcw, and stores; Indeed, the pivot might give way entirely, and yet the hook could'not yield or iy. The disconnecting lever or trip F is pivoted at'f, and its long end, "q, has a cord or chain, It, connected to it, by which it 'may be operated. The short end, '12,y ofthe lever is roundedoiif eccentrically, -so that after it is-- started from its locking position against the hook, the teudencycf the hook to y-or raise upwill aidA in throwing outA said locking lever, and thus facilitate the operation ot" ldetaching thelboat `from the tackle by which it is let down. V A'duplica'te apparatus mlyibe arranged at the stern of the boat, so that a single person, by drawing upon the' cords or chains connected with'each, may let the boat go bythebow and stern simultaneously, or bythe stern iirst and then by the bow, as may be most desirablev in view of the state of' the `sea in which she is launched. Instead of the lever F working horizontally it ma vwork vertically, it being only necessary to cut a vertical mortise through the timbervG, on which it is pivotcd,
to effect this'modiiication of it. l i
What I claim as myjnvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A In combination with a hook use-d in a boat-detaching apparatus, a. reinforce orsecondary hook e, which catche'snnder a solid portion of the head, and thus relieves the 'pivotofthe hook, or makes a safety connection should the pivot of the hook give way, substantially'as described. i y
.And I claim, in ,combination with the hook and its reinforce, `an eccentrically-formed tripping-lever, that is aided in being tripped or removed by the pressure of the hook upon its curved edge, substantially as described.
' JAMES R. TAYLOR.
