JENNINGS `SCOTT MCCOMB, OF DBBS FERRY, NEW YORK.
LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. March 23, 1909.
Application iled June 12, 1908. Serial No.` 438,196.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, YJmvruruis Scofrr MCCOMB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dobbs Ferry, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of the same.
This invention relates to loose leaf binders and more particularly to the binder itself and tosmeans for securely holding or locking the loose leaves in the binder to prevent their accidental or unauthorized removal.v
ln the accompanying drawing showing Killustrative embodiments of this invention and in which the same reference numerals refer to similar parts in theV several figures, Figure 1 isa lan view of a blank from which a dumb bell lbrm of' clip or tie is made. Fig. 2 is a plan' view of a sheet of a loose leaf binder and of the dumbv bell clip or tie formed from the blank shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the dumb bell clip or tie. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section through my loose leaf binder, some of the elements for purposes of better illustration being shown in side elevation. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a modified form of blank. Fig. 6 is a lan view of the clip formed from the blank s iown in Fig. 5
ln the illustrative embodiments of this invention shown in the drawing 1 is a blank which may be stamped or cut from any suitable material, preferably thin metal to form a body portion 2, split rings 8, and 4 and arms, 5 and 6 on the ring Y3 and 7 and 8 on the ring 4. One of each pair of arms is elongated and bent up to form hooks 9 and 10, or these hooks may be, and are preferably, formed at the same time that the blank is stamped or cut.
The blank is threaded through a slot 12 in a loose leaf sheet 11 and then bent back on itself, the bend occurring approximately on the line 13. This brings one of the rings 3 or 4 above the other' and on the opposite side of the sheet 11 making the openings 15, 15 in the rings register with the usual filing slot 14 in the sheet 11. The sheet can then be threaded on the usual pillar or post of the binder by causing the post or pillar to pass first through the slot 16, between one of the arms and the end of the complementar hook, thence into the throat 17 of the hooks,
ln Fig. 4 l have shown my improved binder 19 formed with a back 20 and a cover 21 and provided with a telescoping adjustable pillar or post 22 formed of sections 28 and 24; the former being secured to the plate 26 carried by the back and the latter being secured. to the plate 25 forming a part of the cover 21. The plates 25 and 26 have cooperating flan es which serve to protect the ends of' the eaves and the clips or ties. The flanges may be arranged in various ways. l have shown in this Fig. 4 a depending flange 27 connected to the plate 25 and an upwardly extending flange 2S connected to the plate 26. These flanges move upon each other andpermit a wide range of' adjustment of' the cover'21 andV back 20, the leaves and clips being at all times thorou hly protected. ln addition to the ordinary pi lars or posts I use a supplemental post or pillar in connection with one of the posts 22 or l may use a supplemental post with each of' the ordinary filing posts or pillars. The supplemental posts may be variously mounted with relation to the parts of the binder. In Fig. 4 l have shown one form of su plemental post 29 having a head 30 which isllield to the plate 26 by means of the screws 32, 82. It is of course to be understood that it is immaterial how the post 29 is mounted, provided it is secured to one of the plates 25 or 26 and is arranged to take into the throats 17, 17 of the hooks 9 and 10, Fig. 4. By the use of these supplemental posts the dumb bell clips are securely held in the binder not only reventing the unauthorized withdrawalp of any of the sheets but preventing any longitudinal movement of the sheet upon the pillar or ost. l also preferably, though not necessari y,provide a suitable lock kture 39, see Figs. l and 3.
to look the elips or ties in the binder and upon the supplemental post. Any suitable lool;- ing mechanism may be used, suoli as a lock 33 secured to the plate 25 and ada ted to lock the end of the post 29, the loci being controlled by any suitable means, such as by key 34.
In some eases l may 'form the hooks directly upon the rings 3 and 4. In Figs. 5 and 6 the rings 35 and 36 are split so as to make hooks 37, 37, Whieh are adapted to close one of the filing slots in the loose leaf sheet to prevent the accidental or unauthorized removal of one or more o'll the sheets of the binder.
It is to be understood that in all Vforms ol` my invention one clip or tie may secure one or a plurality oll sheets to the binder.
ln some instances l may, if desired, form a fastener on the slip, suoli for instance as by stamping up a part of the blank to 'forni a tooth 38 adapted to coperatie with an aper- Sueh fasteners may, however, be omitted Without departing from my invention.
Having thus described this invention in connection with the several illustrative embodiments thereoll to the details of which I do not desire to be'limited, what is claimed as new and what it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is set l'orth in the appended claims.
1. A loose leaf binder having an adjustable back and eover, loose leaves mounted in the binder, a elip or tie eoperating with one or more ol' the leaves to secure one or more leaves in the binder, and one or more hooks u on the clip or clips.
2. A oose leal binder having an adjustable baok and cover and the ordinary pillar or post, a supplemental ost in the binder, loose leaves mounted in t .e binder, a elip or tie cooperating with one or more ol the leaves to seoure one or more leaves in the binder and one or more hooks upon the olip or clips adapted to cooperate with the supplemental oost.
3. A oose leal binder having a Cover` a plate with a depending flange connected with the cover, a back, a plate provided with an upwardly extending l'lange connected to the back, said llanges cooperating to n'oteet the Contents olthe binder, an adjustable post, loose leaves in the binder, a elip or tie provided With openings adapted to register with the ling slot in the sheet, and one or moreI hooks on the elip or tie.
4. A olip or tie having a body portion, split rings mounted on the body portion, a portion of one or more oll the rings adapted to form a hook to Close the filing slot in a loose leal' sheet..
5. A elip or tie having a body portion, split rings mounted on the body portion, arms Connected to the split rings, and a hook upon one olA the arms.
6. A loose lealA binder having two sets ol' filing pillars or posts, one set arranged in tho rear ol' the other set.
7. A loose leal' binder having two sets ol` i'iling pillars or posts, loose leaves mounted in the binder and eli )s or ties adapt-ed to secure one or more slieets to both ol' pillars or posts.
8. A loose leaf binder having two sets oll filing pillars or posts, loose leaves mounted in the binder, ohps or ties adapted to seouro one or more sheets to both sets olI pillars or posts, and a look to seeure the elips on the pillars or posts.
