Description
HoMERc. HUNT, or nUQUEs'int,I PENNSYLVANIA.
` RAIL-FASTEVNER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented. March 16,-1909. I*
Application filed November 13, 1908. Serial No. 4623503.
ToA till-'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOMER C. HUNT, a citizen ofthe United States of America, lresiding at Duquesne, in the county of Alle- -gheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usefulV Improvements in Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein tothe accompanying drawing,y
This .invention relates to rail fasteners partic'ularly adapted for use in connection with metallic'ties and the object thereof is to pro-v `vide in a manner as hereinafter set forth, rail fasteners .carried lby 'longimdinal sleepers or base plates seated upon the ties and which will rovide practically a continuous joint there y eliminatingthe jarring and bumping of rolling stocks when passing over theconfronting ends of two rails; furthermore to provide afastener in a manner as hereinafter set forth that willsecurely retain the rails in engagement with the sleepers or base plates so as to prevent lateraLlongitudinal and vertical dis laeement of the rails.
The a' ove objects are attained by a structure -that will be hereinafter described and then specifically claimed.
In t e drawings z-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rail fastener partly in section7 Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, -Fig?, is a plan, F'g. 4 is a perspective view of the. outer `member of the fastener, and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the inner member of the fastener.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 designates metallic ties, T-.shaped in cross section. These ties arel suitably s aced a art in ,the ballast of a road bed, an upon t eties are secured in any suitable manner longitudinal sleepers or base plates 2 said slee ers or base plates adjoining upon the ties. hese sleepers or base plates are ada ted to support rails -3 and to secure said rai s to the sleepers vices are employe A u tles-l.
or base plates2, a lurality of fasteningded), which areb staggeredly arranged relative to therails 3, between the Each of said fastening'devices comprises an inner coupling membenan outer wedge member and an intermediate locking member. The coupling, wedge and locking members of each fastening device are positioned in a rectangular opening 4 formed in the base` plate 2.
The coupling member consists` ofa vertically extending body portion 5 beveled at its at 5 and 5b respectively. Projecting later-- ally from the upper end of thebody portion 5 l is a gri ping arm 6 beveled on its upper and lower face as at '6a. Projecting terally from the lowerjend ofthe body. portion'5. is a gripping arm 7 ofgreater length *than vthe gripping-arm 6 and the said arm 7 haseJ por-v tion of its upper face fiat as at 7 andits 1remain'in'g portionbeveled as at 7 b. The lower face of the grippingarm 7 is beveledas at 7". The lower'face"" ofthe gripping arm 6 beveled so as-t'o conform to the ulpper'face of one side ofthe base-of a railS. heiiat portion 7a of the gripping arm`7 conforms tothe lower face of a baseplate 3.
The wedge member "comprises a `70 body; or-
its outer' fa'cebevelcd asatQb. vProjecting laterally from the upperend of the body'portion 9 of the wedge member is anangularextension 10 having afilat upper'face 10a.
. The intermediate lookin member consists 11 adapted tobe; .placedbetween the body 'portions 5and`9 of the. coupling and lwed emembers, whenthe ofa strip of malleable'meta' saidcoupling and we ge inembers'arejposi-a tionedin an opening 4. The wedgemembers are then` driven downwardly which causes the 4c'ouplin member toclamp one side of the base of t e rail?) to the base plate 2. Inthis connection, it will be stated that the gripping arm of the couplingimember 5 engages one sideof the-base of the rail 3 and the u er face 7 of t'he gri ping arm 7 engagespifie lower face ofthe lliase plate 3, the body portion 9 of the wedge member beingforce 'against one edge of the slot or opening 4 and sald wedge member in connection with Vthe locking member securely retaining the coupling member in position. The upper end of the locking'member 11 is then bent at right angles as at 12 to engage the upper face 10'* of the arm 10 and the'lower arm of the' locking member 11 is bent at an inclination as at 12 to engage the corner 5b of. the coupling member v.and then upwardly at an inof said body'portion Qbeing-flat'as' atQaL "and clination as at 12c toengge the bottom` 79 v of lthe grip ing arm 7. y positioning the ends ofthe ocking member 11 in the manner as stated, provision is `made to prevent the accidental. displacement of said locking causes.
members due to vibrations when the rollingv l y lstock is passingover therails or to other upper outer corner and lower outer corner as vpair of ties the length and eac horizontal arm provided v spirit of theinvention.
Having nowdescribed my invention what aim as new', 1s
1 A railfastener Acomprising thewcombib 'nation with a base plate mounted u on -aand extending in the direction'f of a track bedsaid base plate' rovided with-a .plurality vof openings and rther adapted to support the confronting ends ofva pair of rails, .of coupling members extending through said openingsl and each provided'with an upper and a lower gripping arm engaging res ectively the upper face of the base of the rail and the lower' face of said base plate,.each of said couplingmembers further rovided with a'beveled lower corner 'of the lowerarms of said coupling members having aninclined' lower face, wedge membe'rs extending through said openings at one side of the coupling members, said wedge members .eaeh having at its top a face, and locking members ositioned be- "'J'Ween ,the wedgel and coup ing members;
and each having vits -upper end engaging the flat upper face of an angular arm member and its lower end engaging the beveled lower eorner of a couplingmember said 4coupling members length han the u with a iiat upper of a Wedge and the inclined lower a coupling member. l2. A--rail fastener comprising the combination with a base late mounted upon a pair of ties and exten( ing in the direction of the length of a track bedfsaid base plate provided with a plurality` of openings and further 'adapted to support the confronting ends of a pair' of rails, of coupling members. extending through said openings and each provided With'an upper and a lower gripping arm engaging respectively the upper face of the base of the rail and the lower face of saidase plate, eachv of said coupling members further rovided with a beveled lower corner face of a lower arm of andeac i offthe lower arms-of said coupling members having an inclined lower face, wedge members extending through said openings at one side' of the coupling niembers, saidwedge members each having at its top a horizontal arm provided with a flat upper face, and locking members positioned between the wedge and coupling members, and each having its upper end engaging the flat upper face of an angular arm of a Wedge -m'emberl and its lower end engaging the beveled lower corner'of a coupling member and the inclined lower face of a lower arm of a coupling memben, the said lower arms of being of greater per arms of said members.- ereof I my 'signature two witnesses.
