To all whom it may concern l Be it known that I, MiLLAnn F. WILFONG, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, a citizen' of the United States, have invented or discovered a certain new and useful lmprovement in iannealing-Boxes, of which improvement the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to certain improvements lin annealing boxes.
Experience has shown that the riveted joints, where the sides and top are made of sections and united by rivets, will become loose and permit of the passage of gas or air, such opening of the joints being due to the different percentage of expansion of the different sections, as a result of the difference of temperature to which the several parts of the box are subjected, when in use. Horetofore the joints between the ends and sides have been formed by bending a flange on the head, the bend being sharp, so that the flange for its entire Width will be at right angles to the head, which is so applied that the lla-nge will under-lap the sides and top of the box for practically the entire width of such flange. The rivets securing the head and body will be closely adjacent to the edges of the side and top plates and also to the body of the head, thus forming a very rigid joint. During expansion and contracl-tion the change of dimensions of the heads I will be in directions practically parallel with the sides of the head, or radially. The movement of metal in the sides and top will be in directions at an angle to the directions of enlar ement or the head, and the joint between ie head and sides and top being rigid, the rivets are strained and stretched,

The invention described herein has for its object an annealing boX having its sides and to i formed of a single sheet of metal.
ilt is a further object of the invention' to provide a yielding or flexible connection between the body and the ends of the box.
The invention is hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specication Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of my improved annealing box. Fig. 2 is a bottom p an view of the same; Fig. 3 is an end elevation illustrating a modification, and Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of one end of the box constructed as in Fig. 3.
I In the practice of my invention the sides 1 i and top 2 of the annealing box are formed by properly bending a single sheet or plate of metal, the top being either circular or flat, as desired. But if preferred, the flange and connecting portions may be formed by properly bending a strip of metal, and the head of the end riveted to ,such bent piece, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
It is characteristic of my improved box v that as the sides and top are formed without joints of any kind and the end is so connected to the body of the box that the joint between is not subjected to injurious strains, all liability of leakage is practically eliminated.
